Human Resources (HR) Assistant Community Violence Intervention (CVI) Nonprofit Organization โ€“ Chicago, IL

Public Equity is seeking a professional, organized, and detail-oriented Human Resources (HR) Assistant to support the daily HR and administrative operations of a fast-paced Community Violence Intervention (CVI) nonprofit organization serving communities throughout Chicago. This position plays a key role in supporting employee relations, onboarding, compliance, personnel documentation, payroll coordination, recruitment activities, and overall staff support within a trauma-informed and mission-driven environment.

The HR Assistant will work closely with leadership and management staff to help maintain efficient HR processes while supporting employees who work directly within violence prevention, outreach, case management, behavioral health, and community engagement programs.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, maintains confidentiality, communicates professionally, and is passionate about supporting teams dedicated to community healing, equity, and violence prevention.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Assist with employee onboarding, orientation, and new hire documentation

Maintain organized and confidential personnel files and HR records

Support recruitment efforts, including job postings, interview scheduling, and applicant communication

Assist with employee timekeeping, payroll coordination, and HRIS systems such as ADP

Track staff trainings, certifications, licenses, and compliance requirements

Prepare HR documents including offer letters, disciplinary notices, policy acknowledgments, and employment verifications

Support employee relations by responding to staff inquiries and directing concerns appropriately

Assist with maintaining organizational policies, procedures, and compliance with labor laws and grant requirements

Coordinate staff meetings, trainings, wellness initiatives, and organizational events as needed

Maintain professionalism and confidentiality regarding employee and organizational information

Provide administrative support to leadership and HR management as assigned

Qualifications:

Previous HR, administrative, nonprofit, or office support experience preferred

Knowledge of employment practices, confidentiality standards, and HR processes

Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Teams, and HR systems preferred

Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, community-based environments

Experience working within nonprofit, behavioral health, social services, or violence prevention settings preferred
