What is a relocation consultant?

Relocation Consultants are professionals who assist individuals, families, or employees with the process of moving to a new location, often for work or personal reasons. They provide guidance on housing, schools, local amenities, and cultural adaptation, and may coordinate logistics such as shipping belongings and handling paperwork. Their goal is to make the move as smooth and stress-free as possible by offering personalized support and expert knowledge of the destination area.

What does a relocation consultant do?

As a relocation consultant, you help employees with tasks related to moving to a new location for their jobs. Your duties usually involve working with transferees, or current employees moving to a different office, but you can also provide services for new hires. In this role, you assist with the moving process and provide storage solutions and short-term rentals for employees who need to move quickly. Your responsibilities also involve helping transferees or new hires plan for the cost of living in their new location, find schools and health care facilities, and obtain services such as childcare.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a relocation consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Relocation Consultant, you need knowledge of relocation processes, real estate markets, and client service, often supported by a background in business or real estate. Familiarity with relocation management software, CRM systems, and, in some cases, certifications like GMS (Global Mobility Specialist) is typical. Strong communication, cultural sensitivity, and organizational skills help consultants provide exceptional support and ease transitions for clients. These skills ensure smooth relocations, high client satisfaction, and efficient management of complex moves.

What are some common challenges faced by relocation consultants, and how can they be managed effectively?

Relocation Consultants often encounter challenges such as coordinating complex logistics, managing client expectations, and navigating cultural or legal differences in various locations. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential to handle multiple moving parts and prevent misunderstandings. Building relationships with reliable vendors and staying updated on local regulations also help ensure smooth transitions for clients. Proactively anticipating potential issues and providing clear guidance can make the relocation process less stressful for both the consultant and the client.

Job description

Are you ready to open a world of opportunity in talent mobility? Our clients include some of the largest and most recognized brands in the world. They're innovators and leaders in their industries, making life-enhancing breakthroughs every day. We help them tap into those opportunities by placing their exceptional people where they need to be, anywhere in the world. When it comes to service, we set the bar for exceptional ... and then we raise it with fresh ideas, leading tools and innovative approaches, and it's all grounded in our values of truth, love, and integrity. We call it People-first Mobility. We're looking for exceptional people who share those values along with our passion for delivering the highest levels of service. If that sounds like you, and if you're ready for a new career opportunity, we'd like to hear from you! Here's to the world ahead.
Corporations contract with Graebel as a trusted supplier for relocating their employees. If a client company would like to move a specific employee from one city to another, then our relocation division works with that employee to administer his or her benefits within the parameters of that company's policy or policies.
The needs of the business can vary depending on the time of the year, and summer is often (but not always) the busiest season. There are peaks of heavy volume throughout the year, and the Rental Consultant must be able to accommodate the amount of work that is required. This may require working beyond a standard work week throughout the year.
We need an individual who enjoys working and helping customers during stressful circumstances, so a deep desire to help them, using your excellent customer service skills, is paramount. Because we work in a very fast-paced, high-volume environment, you need to be highly organized with a keen sense of priorities and time-management. Our Consultants work in a team environment, so the ability to pitch in when needed is a must.
Below is a sample list of tasks a Rental Consultant may perform:
  • Manage a caseload of transferees who are currently renting a home at their origin, audit expense report reimbursement, and ancillary services
  • Administer client relocation policy to transferees moving within the U.S. and/or Canada
  • Coordinate authorized relocation services including shipment of household goods, home rental assistance, temporary housing, househunting trips, real estate agent placement, etc.
  • Acquire and maintain some knowledge of IRS rules and regulations regarding relocation
  • Counsel transferees regarding the expense management process
  • Identifies and builds relationships with third party service providers and other internal departments
  • Understand and meet services level agreements
  • Update the Company systems with relevant information about the transferee and his/her move
  • Other duties as required

We are committed to fair and transparent compensation. The hourly pay for this role is based on several factors including experience, skills, and qualifications and is $25/hr.
Required Skills
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Strong organization, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team.
  • Professional demeanor in all areas (e-mail, phone, in person).
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Preferred Skills: MS Office proficiency.
  • 1-3 years of general office.
  • Any relocation or real estate experience.
  • Extensive phone usage.

Required Experience
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook. Bachelor's degree is preferred; however, related experience in Real Estate or Relocation will be considered in lieu of formal education.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
As a testament to our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and in alignment with our commitment to fair and transparent compensation, our compensation bands are transparent both internally and as a part of our external recruitment process. The target for this role is $25/hr.
At Graebel, where we truly value the exceptional contributions of our dedicated team-yes, that means YOU-we've crafted a benefits package with your success in mind. Enjoy a comprehensive benefits package including a 401(k) plan, top notch health insurance (covering medical, dental, and vision), and find support through our Employee Assistance Program. Enjoy well-earned breaks with paid time off that grows with your years of service to the company, paid holidays each year, and volunteer paid time off! Secure your future with life insurance and disability coverage. Join us to elevate your work life experience!
