What is a program manager?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

What does a program manager do?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges program managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

You are directly accountable for end-to-end delivery, including program governance, execution cadence, financial control, risk management, and value realization. Success in this position is defined by your ability to run programs, align stakeholders across engineering, manufacturing, and IT, manage complexity, and deliver measurable business outcomes across scope, schedule, cost, adoption, and data continuity.
Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent required from an accredited institution. Will also consider three years of progressive experience in the specialty in lieu of every year of education.
11+ years of experience in Digital Thread, PLM-led transformation, or connected engineering ecosystems, with a strong focus on enterprise program and large-scale implementation leadership
Demonstrated ownership of complex, multi-year Digital Thread programs spanning multiple business units and geographies
Strong hands-on experience with program governance, financial management, dependency management, risk management, and executive reporting
Solid working knowledge of Digital Thread architectures and platforms, including combinations of PLM, ERP, MES, ALM, and data platforms
Experience delivering Digital Thread programs in industries such as Industrial Manufacturing, Automotive, Aerospace & Defense, or High-Tech
Proven ability to lead senior stakeholders, resolve conflicts, and drive decisions in complex environments
Key Responsibilities
Program Ownership & Execution
• Own full end-to-end delivery of enterprise Digital Thread programs, from mobilization through stabilization and benefits realization
• Establish and run program governance (roadmaps, milestones, dependencies, RAID, escalation paths, and executive reporting)
• Drive execution across multiple parallel workstreams, including PLM, ERP, MES, ALM, data platforms, integrations, testing, deployment, and organizational change
• Serve as the final escalation point for delivery risks, issues, and cross-functional conflicts
• Ensure consistent execution across US-based and globally distributed delivery teams
Financial & Delivery Accountability
• Own program financials including budget, forecast accuracy, change control, and cost governance
• Manage scope, schedule, quality, and risk to meet committed delivery outcomes
• Drive delivery predictability through disciplined planning, cadence, and performance tracking
Stakeholder, Client & Vendor Leadership
• Act as the primary accountable leader for senior Business, Engineering, Manufacturing, and IT stakeholders
• Lead executive forums including SteerCos, QBRs, and MBRs
• Drive alignment and decision-making across business units, functions, and geographies
• Manage Digital Thread platform vendors and system integrators to ensure contractual and delivery commitments are met
• Support sales and account teams by shaping execution-focused program plans and delivery models
Value Realization & Outcomes
• Define and track program-level KPIs tied to engineering efficiency, cycle time, data quality, reuse, productivity, quality, and cost
• Ensure delivered Digital Thread capabilities translate into realized business value, not just technical go-live
• Identify opportunities to de-risk, accelerate, or optimize execution throughout the program lifecycle
People & Delivery Capability Leadership
• Lead and mentor program managers, project managers, solution leads, and workstream owners
• Build a high-accountability delivery culture focused on transparency, ownership, and outcomes
• Drive reuse of delivery standards, templates, and best practices across Digital Thread programs
