Job description

Compensation Range:
Hourly: $30.63 - $39.82
Position Summary
The Learning Experience Designer (LXD) creates innovative and engaging online courses by employing current online teaching and learning methodologies. This position works with subject matter experts to design and develop courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional development levels. The LXD provides guidance on aligning competencies, assessments, and learning objects to optimize the learning experience. The Learning Experience Designer works in collaboration with team members to oversee project management processes and resources, project documents and other related materials. Additionally, this position is expected to contribute to the following steps in the curriculum development process:
Essential Functions:
  • Conduct needs assessment and initial analysis as part of their collaboration with NU Faculty and Course Authors (CA).
  • Ensure alignment of curriculum to assessment and online content.
  • Employ teaching and learning best practices into the development of online content.
  • Author original content and modify existing materials in coordination with CAs.
  • Incorporate digital media into the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Maintain and update course related content.
  • Consult in designing effective assessments and evaluation methods.
  • Integrate credential and badging opportunities associated with national trends and workforce standards.
  • The Learning Experience Designer consults with lead faculty, Curriculum Directors (CD) on online course curriculum development by:
  • Designing and providing recommendations for custom multimedia activities and other engaging course elements.
  • Developing and consulting on appropriate assessment strategies.
  • Conducting training and coaching on best practices for online course design.
  • The Learning Experience Designer both designs and builds the course from start to finish by:
  • Evaluating course materials to ensure that online course curriculum is consistent with requirements as specified by CAs.
  • Planning, conceptualizing, and organizing multimedia and design projects.
  • Making design decisions and creating original content.
  • Designing and developing effective custom multimedia content.
  • May act as lead on course development or multimedia projects.
  • Coordinate with CAs, Faculty, Curriculum and Assessment Directors, and Creative Services team to develop existing and/or original online course content.
  • Assist in designing innovative and engaging online courses while incorporating digital media into the LMS platform.
  • Translate subject matter expertise into instructional content through original and modified course materials, design mockups and visuals, scenarios and simulations, storyboards, and other documentation.
  • Create job aids and tutorials to assist instructors with online course delivery tools and/or platforms.
  • Collaborate with CAs to provide consulting on online Learning and instructional design best practices.
  • Write and align competencies at the micro- to macro-level, create formative assessment, aligned learning objects, and adaptive instructional strategies.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining online teaching and learning standards/framework for institutional course development.
  • Develop courses from start to finish, including multimedia and building in the LMS, across a primarily agile methodology.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Innovation or similar degree highly preferred.
  • Three to four years of experience developing courses in a corporate, educational, or freelance environment or commensurate experience in fields related to education, instruction, curriculum development, research and assessment, training, project management and online pedagogy required.
  • One to four years' experience with at least one of the following eLearning development tools:
  • Online course creation within hosting platforms such as Brightspace, Blackboard, Canvas
  • Online learning or training and development tools such as Articulate Storyline or Rise, Kaltura, Videoscribe, Piktochart
  • At least two years of higher education experience in instruction, leadership, curriculum development, research and assessment, and online pedagogy is strongly preferred.
  • Certification in project management, or proof of at least six (6) months' project management training is a plus.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:
  • Intermediate-to-advanced knowledge of common eLearning development tools and LMS.
  • Knowledge in education and training, developing original e-learning content, or the employment of instructional design systems methodologies in the development of online curricula.
  • Demonstrated experience in content development, curriculum development, and training.
  • Strong knowledge of Internet terms, technologies, and protocols.
  • Experience in academic planning, assessment, accreditation, and certification.
  • Ability to conduct research through a variety of methods.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in development of eLearning materials.
  • Strong interpersonal and counseling skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of personnel.
  • Knowledge and experience working in adult education in the academic and training environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail and follow-through, as well as the ability to organize a multitude of tasks under time constraints.
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities including interpersonal relations are essential.ount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures and viewing a computer terminal. The work is performed in an office environment.
