What are some common challenges faced by internal recruiters when balancing hiring needs across multiple departments?

Internal recruiters often juggle competing priorities from various departments, each with urgent hiring needs and unique requirements. A key challenge is managing expectations and ensuring transparent communication with all stakeholders to prioritize roles based on business objectives. Recruiters must also navigate shifting timelines, evolving job specifications, and limited resources while maintaining a positive candidate experience. Developing strong relationships with department leaders and regularly reviewing hiring forecasts can help address these challenges effectively.

What does an internal recruiter do?

An Internal Recruiter is responsible for identifying, attracting, and hiring talent for positions within their own organization. They work closely with hiring managers to understand staffing needs, create job postings, screen applications, and coordinate interviews. Unlike external recruiters, internal recruiters focus exclusively on filling roles within their company and may also be involved in onboarding new hires and developing recruitment strategies. Their goal is to ensure the organization has the best talent to meet its business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internal recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internal Recruiter, you need a solid understanding of talent acquisition, interviewing techniques, and organizational hiring needs, typically supported by a degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), HRIS platforms, and sometimes certifications like SHRM-CP or PHR is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders set top performers apart. These skills ensure the effective attraction and placement of high-quality candidates, supporting organizational growth and culture.

What does an internal recruiter do?

As an internal recruiter, you identify current and future staffing needs of a business, develop a sound brand name, and ensure a company is giving employees a positive experience. Your responsibilities include collaborating with the recruiting team and your managers to write job advertisements for open positions and then finding areas to advertise jobs such as career pages, social media, and job boards. You source some employees through online channels like professional networks and portfolio sites. In some positions, you are also asked to implement employee referral plans. Other duties include participating in career fairs and other related recruiting events that can boost the company’s reputation. You assist with new employee onboarding, offer interview feedback, answer candidate questions, analyze employee retention and turnover rates to better determine hiring needs.

We are looking for a Fulltime Contract Recruiter to join our team fully REMOTE! The contract will be from start date to 12/31/2026.

At Sure Steel, Inc., we are more than just a construction company. We are builders of success, integrity, and innovation. We have established ourselves as a trusted leader in the steel fabrication and construction industry. Our commitment to excellence, safety, and customer satisfaction has earned us a reputation for delivering top-quality projects on time and within budget. Our team is dedicated to delivering innovative solutions to meet the unique needs of each project, ensuring safety, efficiency, and client satisfaction.

Position Overview

Sure Steel, Inc. is seeking a dynamic Recruiter specializing in skilled trades within the construction industry. This role is essential to uphold Sure Steel's values of integrity, safety, and continuous improvement by ensuring a high standard of candidate selection and placement to meet project requirements across various locations nationwide.

The Recruiter will split their focus between hands-on field recruiting at active project sites and corporate/office-based recruiting operations, working closely with field teams, project managers, and internal HR to keep projects fully staffed with qualified skilled trades professionals. This role requires extensive travel to project sites throughout the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel extensively to project sites across the United States to support on-the-ground hiring needs and build direct relationships with field teams.

  • Attend project meetings, site visits, job fairs, trade shows, and industry events to network with construction professionals and identify staffing needs in real time.

  • Coordinate and facilitate on-site interviews and hands-on candidate assessments in collaboration with project managers and field supervisors.

  • Build and maintain relationships with local trade schools, vocational programs, and workforce development organizations to create a regional talent pipeline.

  • Establish and grow relationships with project managers, field supervisors, subcontractors, and local labor unions to support recruitment efforts.

  • Serve as a visible, on-site brand ambassador for Sure Steel, Inc., representing the company professionally within the local construction community.

  • Provide timely feedback and hiring recommendations to field leadership based on direct site observations and candidate evaluations.

  • Conduct proactive sourcing and full-cycle recruitment for skilled trades roles, including welders, fabricators, ironworkers, crane operators, and other construction professionals.

  • Screen and assess candidate qualifications, skills, and experience through phone interviews and structured evaluations, ensuring alignment with job requirements.

  • Conduct thorough reference checks and background screenings to verify candidate credentials, work history, and qualifications prior to employment.

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date candidate and job order records within the company's Applicant Tracking System (ATS).

  • Partner with HR and field operations to coordinate onboarding, including new-hire paperwork, orientation, and safety training scheduling.

  • Serve as a point of contact for new hires regarding employment, benefits, and company policy questions throughout onboarding.

  • Ensure all recruitment activities comply with employment laws, EEO regulations, and company confidentiality policies.

  • Match candidates to open roles based on skills, experience, and project requirements, working directly with project managers to deliver tailored staffing solutions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum of 4+ years of proven experience recruiting within the construction or skilled trades industry.

  • Strong understanding of construction trades and industry-specific requirements.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with candidates, clients, and internal teams.

  • Proficiency with recruitment software and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and alignment with Sure Steel, Inc. core values.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Familiarity with employment laws and best practices in recruitment and selection.
