What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Immigration Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Immigration Specialist, you need a solid understanding of immigration laws, procedures, and documentation requirements, typically supported by a degree in law, international relations, or a related field. Familiarity with case management systems, government immigration portals, and, in some cases, certifications such as Accredited Representative status is valuable. Strong communication, attention to detail, and cultural sensitivity are essential soft skills for interacting with diverse clients and ensuring accuracy. These skills and qualities are crucial for navigating complex regulations, advocating for clients, and ensuring compliance with legal standards.

What are some common challenges Immigration Specialists face when handling multiple client cases simultaneously?

Immigration Specialists often juggle several client cases at once, each with unique deadlines, documentation requirements, and legal complexities. Staying organized and prioritizing tasks is essential to avoid missing critical submission dates or overlooking important paperwork. Effective communication with clients and government agencies can also be challenging, as regulations frequently change and updates must be relayed promptly. Utilizing case management software and maintaining detailed records are common strategies to manage these challenges successfully.

What is the difference between Immigration Specialist vs Paralegal?

AspectImmigration SpecialistParalegal
CredentialsOften requires immigration certifications or trainingTypically has paralegal certification or associate degree in legal studies
Work EnvironmentGovernment agencies, law firms, or corporate legal departmentsLaw firms, corporate legal departments, or government offices
Job FocusSpecializes in immigration laws, visa processing, and complianceSupports attorneys with legal research, document preparation, and case management

While both roles work within legal and immigration contexts, Immigration Specialists focus specifically on immigration laws and procedures, often requiring specialized certifications. Paralegals provide broader legal support across various law areas, including immigration, but typically do not specialize solely in immigration law. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers find the right fit for their skills and career goals.

What Is an Immigration Specialist?

Immigration specialists are typically lawyers or paralegals at law firms who assist foreign nationals with immigration procedures. They help applicants apply for work permits, citizenship, adoptions, or deal with homeland security issues. Specialists are different than immigration officers, who complete BASIC immigration officers’ training through USCIS and are often stationed at border entry, or in immigration offices. Job responsibilities of specialists can include submitting or appealing petitions, defending immigrants against fraud claims, or providing guidance about current policies to clients or their legal teams.

What does an Immigration Specialist do?

An Immigration Specialist assists individuals and organizations with navigating immigration laws and procedures. They help clients prepare and submit visa, green card, and citizenship applications, ensuring all documentation is accurate and complete. Immigration Specialists may also provide guidance on legal requirements, help clients understand their options, and stay updated on changes in immigration regulations. Their work is essential for those seeking to live, work, or study in a new country.

If you're passionate about immigration compliance, process excellence, and supporting global talent, this is your opportunity to play a vital role in helping a world-class aerospace company attract and retain the skilled professionals who drive innovation.

As the Immigration Specialist, you'll serve as the primary point of contact for U.S. immigration matters, partnering with HR, Global Mobility, employees, and external immigration counsel to ensure immigration cases are managed accurately, efficiently, and in full compliance with federal regulations. Your expertise will directly support business continuity while enhancing the employee experience for international talent.

What You'll Do

In this highly collaborative role, you'll oversee immigration operations, manage vendor relationships, and drive continuous improvements across the organization's immigration programs.

Immigration Program Management

  • Manage U.S. immigration processes, including nonimmigrant visas, permanent residency, PERM labor certifications, renewals, petitions, and related applications.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for immigration questions, providing guidance to employees, Human Resources, Global Mobility, and business leaders.

  • Coordinate with external immigration counsel to ensure timely legal advice, case updates, and compliance with federal immigration laws.

  • Review immigration petitions and applications for accuracy and completeness prior to submission.

  • Provide stakeholders with regular updates on case progress, immigration timelines, and business impacts.

  • Act as a subject matter expert, helping leaders understand sponsorship requirements, compliance considerations, costs, timelines, and business implications.

  • Monitor immigration dashboards and reporting to ensure visibility into active cases, service levels, and operational performance.

  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, streamline processes, and enhance operational efficiency.

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and process documentation for immigration activities.

Vendor Management

  • Manage relationships with external immigration providers to ensure exceptional service delivery and adherence to established service level agreements (SLAs).

  • Partner with vendors to conduct case audits, data integrity reviews, and system assessments.

  • Monitor vendor performance and ensure immigration strategies align with business objectives.

  • Maintain reporting related to case status, renewals, PERM and green card timelines, and other key immigration metrics.

  • Serve as the escalation point for immigration-related concerns, ensuring timely issue resolution.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of two years of experience in U.S. immigration, global mobility, or employment-based immigration within a large corporate environment or immigration law firm.

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. employment-based immigration processes, including visa sponsorship and permanent residency programs.

  • Ability to prioritize competing deadlines while managing multiple cases and projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining confidentiality and compliance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting immigration programs within manufacturing, aerospace, or other global organizations.

  • Fluency in French, German, or Spanish.

  • Experience driving process improvements and operational efficiencies.

  • Familiarity with immigration case management systems and reporting tools.

Work Environment

  • Contract position based in Herndon, Virginia.

  • Hybrid schedule with approximately 80% onsite and 20% remote work.

  • Primarily office-based with occasional movement throughout office and production environments.

  • Minimal travel may be required.

  • Ability to perform standard office functions, including prolonged computer work, communication, and occasional lifting of materials up to 30 pounds.

Ready to Make a Global Impact?

If you're an experienced immigration professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys helping global talent navigate complex immigration processes, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply today to join PDS Tech Commercial and partner with a leader in the aerospace industry, where your expertise will help connect exceptional people with extraordinary opportunities.
