Human Resources Administrator
SMS Mill Services, LLC is a leader in the steel mill services industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/worker' safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS Corporate is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented and professional HR Administrator to support daily human resources operations. This role will assist with administrative HR functions including onboarding, employee records, hiring support, HR systems, and general employee support in a fast-paced industrial environment.
SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain employee files and HR records in compliance with company policies (Paychex)
  • Support recruiting efforts including scheduling interviews and communicating with candidates (JazzHR)
  • Coordinate pre-employment requirements such as background checks, drug screens, and orientation scheduling
  • Assist with onboarding for salaried new hires
  • Respond to unemployment claims
  • Prepare reports, spreadsheets, and HR documents as needed
  • Respond to employee questions regarding policies, procedures, and basic HR matters
  • Assist with Worker's Comp issues
  • Assist with union grievances and contract negotiations
  • Approve status changes for all employees in accordance with Company policy
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee and company information
  • Perform general administrative and clerical duties for the HR department
  • Serve as Payroll backup
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Previous HR experience required
  • Recruiting experience is a must!
  • Experience in manufacturing, or industrial setting
  • Union experience a plus
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to handle confidential information professionally
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)
  • Ability to multitask and work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Associate degree or above required
