What Does an Elevator Engineer Do?
As an elevator engineer, your responsibilities are to install and repair elevators. You service the mechanical components using job-specific equipment, acting as a technician for any company that utilizes an elevator. Other duties require you to assemble parts, plan installations, and ensure the proper operation of an elevator. An elevator engineer might also work with escalators, lifts, and moving walkways. Fixing electrical wiring is a significant part of your job, so you must understand components like brakes and motors. You may work for a single organization or in a freelance capacity.
What is the difference between Elevator Engineer vs Elevator Technician?
| Aspect | Elevator Engineer | Elevator Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Engineering degree, certifications like NICET Level III or IV | Technical certifications, on-the-job training |
| Work Environment | Design, project planning, overseeing installation | Maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs |
| Employer & Industry | Construction firms, engineering companies | Elevator service companies, building maintenance |
Elevator Engineers focus on designing, planning, and overseeing elevator systems, often requiring engineering degrees and advanced certifications. Elevator Technicians handle installation, maintenance, and repairs, typically with technical training and certifications. Both roles are essential in the elevator industry but differ mainly in scope and responsibilities.
