What Are Data Privacy Jobs?

Data privacy jobs focus on helping a company manage and protect information. This has two primary focuses: company information and customer information. In these roles, you may study industry sources to evaluate potential risks, help ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and determine the best response to any violation of these rules. Data privacy jobs often involve using encryption to manage and store sensitive information, determining when or if to share information with others, and creating company policies to help ensure employees do not inadvertently violate privacy protection laws. Some industries—most notably healthcare—have additional data privacy requirements that you may be responsible for enforcing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Privacy professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Privacy professional, you need strong knowledge of data protection laws (like GDPR and CCPA), risk assessment, and compliance best practices, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as CIPP or CIPM. Familiarity with privacy management tools, data classification systems, and legal research databases is typically required. Attention to detail, ethical judgment, and effective communication are key soft skills for managing sensitive information and educating stakeholders. These skills ensure organizations remain compliant, protect customer trust, and mitigate the risks of data breaches.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in data privacy roles?

Professionals in data privacy roles often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly changing regulations, ensuring organization-wide compliance, and balancing data protection with business needs. They frequently collaborate with IT, legal, and business teams to develop and implement privacy policies, manage data subject requests, and respond to potential data breaches. Staying informed about new technologies and emerging threats is also essential, making continuous learning a key part of the role.

What is data privacy?

Data privacy refers to the protection of personal or sensitive information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. It involves implementing policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure that individuals’ data is collected, stored, and processed in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Data privacy professionals help organizations mitigate risks, maintain customer trust, and avoid legal penalties by ensuring proper handling of data. This field is especially important in industries that handle large volumes of personal information, such as healthcare, finance, and technology.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

In data privacy, roles such as privacy analyst or compliance coordinator can sometimes earn around $3,000 monthly without requiring a degree, especially with relevant certifications like CIPP or CIPM. These positions often focus on data protection policies, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, and may require strong analytical skills and knowledge of privacy laws. Experience and industry-specific skills can influence salary levels for these roles.

What is the difference between Data Privacy vs Data Security?

AspectData PrivacyData Security
FocusProtecting personal and sensitive information from misuse and ensuring compliance with privacy lawsSafeguarding data from unauthorized access, breaches, and cyber threats
CredentialsPrivacy certifications (e.g., CIPP, CIPM), knowledge of privacy lawsSecurity certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM), technical security skills

Data Privacy focuses on protecting personal information and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, while Data Security emphasizes technical measures to prevent unauthorized data access. Both roles are essential for comprehensive data protection but differ in their primary objectives and skill sets.

Job description

Hinge is the dating app designed to be deleted
In today's digital world, finding genuine relationships is tougher than ever. At Hinge, we're on a mission to inspire intimate connection to create a less lonely world. We're obsessed with understanding our users' behaviors to help them find love, and our success is defined by one simple metric- setting up great dates. With millions of users across the globe, we've become the most trusted way to find a relationship, for all.
About the Role
We are looking for a Data Privacy Specialist to join our newly established Data + Privacy Operations team within the Critical Response & Enterprise Risk function. In this role, you will own the operational handling of sensitive privacy and security requests submitted by users, regulators, and internal stakeholders - including Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs), data deletion requests, privacy law inquiries, and security-related claims.
You'll bring strong analytical thinking and operational rigor to ensuring our responses meet global regulatory requirements and internal compliance standards. You'll also play an active role in improving the workflows, documentation, and tooling that help us scale our privacy operations responsibly.
Responsibilities
  • Own Privacy Request Handling: Manage and resolve user-initiated DSARs, data deletion requests, and other privacy-related inquiries end-to-end - from identity verification and data validation to case documentation and escalation to Match Group Privacy when required
  • >
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Process requests in alignment with global privacy regulations including GDPR, Brazil LGPD, and CCPA/CPRA, monitoring deadlines and maintaining consistent handling standards to mitigate legal, regulatory, and reputational risk
  • >
  • Drive Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Privacy, Legal, Data Engineering, and Security teams to investigate and resolve complex requests, escalating cases involving potential security breaches or regulatory complaints as needed
  • >
  • Maintain Queue & Risk Management: Manage incoming DPS tickets while maintaining SLA compliance, prioritizing high-risk requests, and proactively flagging risks or backlogs to leadership
  • >
  • Improve Operations at Scale: Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve tooling, and automate processes - while maintaining and updating internal knowledge bases and procedural documentation
  • >
  • Contribute to Organizational Insight: Develop deep knowledge of internal data pipelines, privacy policies, and safety systems, and provide leadership with operational insights on trends, emerging risks, and process improvements
  • >
What We're Looking For
  • 2+ years of experience in a user-facing role in privacy operations, trust & safety, risk operations, compliance, or data governance
  • Familiarity with global privacy regulations including GDPR, LGPD, and CCPA/CPRA
  • Experience handling sensitive or high-risk user requests with strong attention to detail
  • Strong analytical and investigative skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with technical and legal stakeholders
  • Excellent written communication and documentation skills
  • Nice to have: Experience processing DSARs or regulatory privacy requests; familiarity with data systems or data retrieval workflows; background in Trust & Safety, customer escalations, or compliance operations; experience in a global technology or platform environment

$78,000 - $94,000 a year
