Position Summary

We are seeking a qualified Cost Accountant to join our team to create, manage, and maintain individual job budgets for homes in inventory. This includes cost variance analysis and cost management during the life cycle of each home to ensure accurate lot costs.

Overview & Position Summary

This position supports cost accounting activities to ensure accurate product costing, inventory valuation, and financial analysis. This role works under moderate supervision to analyze cost data, support reporting requirements, and assist with variance analysis that impacts operational and financial decision-making. It collaborates with accounting, operations, and finance teams to ensure cost information is accurate, consistent, and aligned with established accounting standards.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain cost accounting records, schedules, and supporting documentation
  • Analyze material, labor, and overhead costs to identify variances and trends
  • Support inventory valuation and cost allocation processes in accordance with accounting standards
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities related to cost accounting
  • Investigate cost variances and discrepancies through analysis and collaboration with internal partners
  • Ensure cost data accuracy and compliance with accounting policies and internal controls
  • Communicate cost-related findings and explanations to internal stakeholders as needed
  • Support audits by preparing cost accounting documentation and responding to inquiries
  • Provide guidance or assistance to entry-level staff or support employees as appropriate

 

Education & Experience

Required:

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant cost accounting, accounting, or finance experience, or equivalent (e.g., 6–8 years)
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field
  • Experience performing cost analysis, inventory accounting, or financial data review
  • Ability to provide informal guidance or assistance to others within a team environment

Preferred:

  • Additional experience in cost accounting within manufacturing, construction, or project-based environments
  • Knowledge of cost accounting principles, inventory valuation methods, and variance analysis
  • Experience using ERP systems, cost accounting modules, and spreadsheet applications

  • Broad knowledge of cost accounting principles and financial analysis techniques
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for evaluating cost data and variances
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in financial documentation and reporting

Working Conditions

Compensation

  • Base Salary: $68,000-$75,000
  • FLSA Status: Exempt 
  • Bonus Type: Year-end Discretionary
