Job description

Salem City Schools is searching for a qualified applicant for the position of Student Support Specialist for the 2026-2027 school year. Position open until filled. STUDENT SUPPORT SPECIALIST GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:Performs intermediate paraprofessional work providing tutorial support and academic monitoring services to students in general instruction or in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects (PASS), facilitate and monitor student access to and performance in a subject or assigned group of subjects offered through the use of emerging technology (Library/Personalized Learning Lab), assist students in the media center with selection of appropriate materials, monitor the behavior of students assigned to in-school detention, and does related work as required.

Work is performed under the regular supervision of the building Assistant Principal. This is a non-exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions and noise.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:Providing tutorial support and academic monitoring for students; assisting students to success in coursework provided through technology; enforcing established rules and regulations; motivating students to achieve maximum potential. The Student Support Specialist also......Adapts teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students;Provide individualized and group instruction in areas where students need assistance;Collaborate and communicate with subject area teachers to support a program of study that facilitates current and future academic success;Communicates with students, student counselors and parents through conferences and other means;Compiles, maintains, and reports student performance data to the counseling department and teachers;Provides guidance and assistance to students to facilitate their successful completion of assignments;Checks and processes books, records, magazines, and other materials in and out of libraries and media center;Assists students with the use of computers;Troubleshoots and maintains computers;May assist in classrooms as assigned;Explains expected conduct and achievement to students;Supervises individuals or small groups of students in a disciplinary setting;Monitors and reports inappropriate student behaviors to administration;Enters and analyzes discipline records and assigns, records, and logs minor disciplinary infractions;Coordinates faculty coverage for student support programs;Performs related tasks as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:General knowledge of subject(s) taught; general knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; general knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and parents

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with a degree in an acceptable field. Bachelor's degree preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
