What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a communication director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Communication Director, you need expertise in strategic communication, media relations, brand messaging, and typically a degree in communications or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems, social media analytics tools, and public relations software is commonly required. Exceptional leadership, crisis management, and persuasive writing skills set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure clear, consistent messaging and protect the organization's reputation across multiple channels.

Is a communication director a stressful job?

A communication director role can be stressful due to the need to manage multiple stakeholders, meet tight deadlines, and handle crisis communication. The job often requires strong organizational skills, adaptability, and the ability to work under pressure, especially during high-profile or sensitive situations.

The main difference between a Communication Director and a Public Relations Manager lies in scope and responsibilities. Communication Directors oversee all communication strategies within an organization, while Public Relations Managers focus specifically on media relations and public image management. Both roles require similar credentials and are vital in corporate communication efforts, but their focus areas differ based on organizational needs.

What are some common challenges communication directors face when managing messaging across multiple platforms?

Communication Directors often encounter the challenge of ensuring consistent messaging across diverse channels such as social media, press releases, internal communications, and public statements. Balancing the need for timely responses with accuracy and alignment to the organization's voice requires strong coordination among teams. Additionally, adapting messages for different audiences while maintaining brand integrity can be complex, especially during high-pressure or crisis situations. Effective cross-department collaboration and up-to-date knowledge of digital trends are essential to navigate these challenges successfully.

What does a communication director do?

A Communication Director is responsible for overseeing an organization’s internal and external communications. They develop and implement communication strategies, manage public relations campaigns, and ensure that messaging aligns with the organization's goals and values. Their work helps to build and maintain a positive public image and effectively convey important information to stakeholders.

Job description

About FGS Longview

FGS Longview's experts provide insight and guidance to help businesses and organizations reduce risk and seize opportunities by building common ground with stakeholders and navigating the unexpected with clarity and confidence.

We bring original thinking and years of experience to corporate and financial communications, investor relations, public affairs, and special situations including M&A, shareholder activism, and regulatory approvals. Our value comes from our understanding that every situation is different - and our ability to provide sound judgment, strategic positioning, and an expert sounding board when it matters most.

FGS Longview is part of FGS Global, which partners with the world's most influential leaders to move minds and markets.

Working where business, government, and public opinion intersect, we advise CEOs, boards, and leadership teams at the most consequential moments. Our expertise spans strategic and financial communications, policy and public affairs, corporate reputation, crisis management, and data-driven digital engagement. Across 31 global offices, our partners draw on the full depth of the firm so clients can operate with clarity, act with confidence, and lead with trust.

Responsibilities

FGS Longview is looking for a Director, Strategic Communications to join our Calgary office. This role involves leading the day-to-day execution of both long-term communications assignments and special situations for clients in all industries. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with exceptional writing and analytical skills who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, and excels at distilling complex information into clear and compelling messaging. While candidates from diverse professional backgrounds are welcome, strategic and financial communications experience in a professional services firm is strongly preferred, and experience in the energy sector is an asset.

Specifics include:
  • Serving as account project manager, including assigning responsibilities, anticipating file needs and ensuring activities are completed on-time, while providing strategic and tactical support to senior team members.
  • Serving as the focal point for information on accounts with knowledge of all activity that is relevant to the file.
  • Developing materials (e.g., strategic communications plans, press releases, investor presentations, shareholder letters, talking points, Q&As, etc.).
  • Engaging directly with clients and advisors, representing FGS Longview's recommendations or position on issues that have a financial, reputation and/or business impact.
  • Building and managing media relationships, including responding to inbound inquiries and serving as a spokesperson for clients.
  • Serving as a role model for other colleagues by leading through actions - being prepared, proactive and available, with a "can do" attitude.
  • Supporting new business opportunities in the market and working to strengthen and expand existing client relationships with compelling ideas and excellent service.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Highly collaborative, with strong communications skills, and able to work well in teams.
  • Client-focused, with a high bar for quality and results.
  • Outstanding writing skills, including excellent proofreading skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, and an ability to seamlessly balance multiple assignments and client situations simultaneously.
  • Confidence and presence to work effectively with senior members of account teams and clients in high-stakes situations.
  • A "roll-up your sleeves" attitude, without concern for getting the credit.  Driven by success of the effort versus personal ego.
  • Well-rounded, adaptable and detailed-oriented individual comfortable working through challenges.
  • Quick learner, who is prepared to jump in at a moment's notice.
  • Solid judgment and the capacity to accurately assess complicated situations and ask the right questions.
  • A sense of urgency and creative persistence along with a willingness to go the extra mile.
  • Highly motivated and calm under pressure.
  • The ability to manage, be responsible for and mentor early career colleagues.
Personal Attributes
  •  Collaborative team player
  •  Demonstrates high integrity and confidentiality at all times
  •  Articulate - a great communicator across all levels
  •  Entrepreneurial spirit
  •  Self-Starter
  •  Honest, trustworthy, and personable
  •  A "how can I help" approach
Experience
  •  5-10 years of relevant experience in agency or client-side communications, finance, law, journalism or a related field. A strong preference is for candidates with directly relevant experience from a strategic communications advisory   firm. Energy sector experience is an asset.
  •  A bachelor's degree with an outstanding academic record is required, advanced degree is a plus.
What We Offer: FGS Longview offers a competitive salary, annual profit share/performance bonus, and comprehensive medical benefits.
  • Generous time off benefits, including vacation, personal and parental leave.
  • A collaborative group of smart, passionate and highly motivated people.
  • Team-oriented work environment structured to provide opportunities for ongoing professional growth and development.
  • An opportunity to interface with the media, corporate, financial and legal communities on a variety of dynamic and high-profile transactions and special situations.
Candidates must be authorized to work in Canada, and not require sponsorship now or in the future.

FGS Longview is committed to employment equity and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, or any protected ground under applicable Canadian law.
