What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Executive Officer, you need strategic vision, leadership experience, and a strong foundation in business management, often supported by an advanced degree such as an MBA. CEOs typically utilize enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial management tools, and may hold certifications in executive leadership. Outstanding communication, decision-making, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for inspiring teams and navigating complex challenges. These capabilities are vital for driving organizational growth, maintaining stakeholder trust, and steering the company toward long-term success.

How does a Chief collaborate with other executives and departments to drive organizational success?

A Chief, such as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Chief Operating Officer (COO), works closely with other executives and department heads to align strategies and ensure that all parts of the organization are working towards shared goals. Regular cross-functional meetings, strategic planning sessions, and open channels of communication are key methods used to foster collaboration. Chiefs often act as a bridge between the board of directors and operational teams, providing leadership, resolving conflicts, and ensuring resources are allocated effectively. This collaborative approach is essential for navigating complex challenges and driving sustainable growth.

What is the difference between Chief vs Project Manager?

AspectChief
Required CredentialsTypically executive-level certifications or extensive industry experience
Work EnvironmentStrategic, high-level decision-making in executive offices
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across various industries as top leadership roles
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for leadership and organizational influence

The main difference between a Chief and a Project Manager is that a Chief holds an executive leadership role responsible for strategic direction and overall organizational success, often requiring advanced credentials and extensive experience. In contrast, a Project Manager focuses on planning, executing, and completing specific projects within defined parameters. While Chiefs influence company-wide policies, Project Managers concentrate on project delivery. Both roles are vital but serve different functions within an organization.

What are Chiefs in an organization?

Chiefs in an organization are senior executives responsible for leading key departments or functions, such as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and Chief Operating Officer (COO). They play a critical role in setting strategy, making high-level decisions, and ensuring the alignment of their departments with the company's overall goals. Chiefs typically report to the board of directors or the company's owner and are instrumental in driving organizational success. Their responsibilities vary depending on their specific title and the size of the organization.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY

NOW CFO is seeking an accomplished and hands-on CFO Consultant to serve a dynamic portfolio of companies throughout the Denver, Colorado market. This is a high-impact role demanding deep operational accounting expertise, buy-side M&A transactional experience, and the ability to navigate complex international financial environments. The ideal candidate has led finance functions from the ground up, is equally comfortable closing the books as presenting to a board, and brings a global perspective to every engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take direct, hands-on ownership of accounting operations — including month-end close, financial statement preparation, reconciliations, cash flow forecasting, and audit readiness — while designing and enforcing financial policies and internal controls that ensure GAAP and regulatory compliance
  • Lead buy-side M&A activity from target identification through post-close integration, encompassing financial due diligence, valuation and LBO modeling, quality-of-earnings analysis, and systems consolidation
  • Manage multi-entity consolidations for clients with global footprints, navigate cross-border compliance (transfer pricing, foreign currency translation, VAT/GST, and local statutory requirements), and support international market expansion
  • Serve as a strategic partner to CEOs, boards, and investors; drive budgeting and long-range planning; mentor finance teams; and lead ERP and data analytics initiatives that sharpen financial visibility and decision-making

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • CPA required; MBA strongly preferred, with 12+ years of progressive financial leadership, including at least 5 years in a CFO or VP of Finance capacity
  • Demonstrated hands-on accounting experience — candidates must have personally managed close processes, prepared financial statements, and maintained ledgers, not solely supervised others
  • Proven buy-side M&A track record with direct experience leading financial due diligence, valuation and LBO modeling, quality-of-earnings analysis, and post-close integration
  • Substantive international finance experience, including multi-currency consolidations, foreign subsidiary management, transfer pricing, and cross-border regulatory compliance
  • Expert-level knowledge of GAAP, advanced financial modeling skills in Excel, and ERP proficiency (NetSuite, SAP, or equivalent); working knowledge of IFRS is a strong plus

Preferred

  • Experience in a consulting or fractional CFO environment serving multiple clients concurrently
  • Exposure to private equity-backed companies and investor reporting requirements
  • Background in industries with complex revenue recognition, inventory management, or project accounting
  • Experience with data analytics tools and technology integration within finance functions
  • Diverse industry experience across sectors such as manufacturing, technology, healthcare, or distribution

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Compensation: $95–$110/hr, commensurate with experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement savings plan with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Professional development and continuing education support
  • Flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance

WHY NOW CFO

At NOW CFO, our consultants work alongside some of the most dynamic and fast-growing companies in the Denver market — and across the country. You will bring your full expertise to bear on real challenges, with the autonomy of a senior executive and the support of a nationally recognized consulting firm.
