What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Chef Internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chef Intern, you need basic culinary skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of a culinary arts program. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, food safety regulations, and basic knife handling techniques is often expected. Strong time management, teamwork, and communication skills help interns adapt to the fast-paced kitchen environment. What is a Chef Internship job?

A Chef Internship is a hands-on learning experience where aspiring chefs work in a professional kitchen under the guidance of experienced chefs. Interns assist with food preparation, cooking, plating, and kitchen organization while developing essential culinary skills. This role provides valuable industry exposure, helping interns gain practical knowledge and improve their efficiency in a fast-paced environment. Chef internships are typically offered by restaurants, hotels, and catering companies, and may lead to full-time employment opportunities.

What kind of training and mentorship can I expect during a Chef Internship?

During a Chef Internship, you can expect hands-on training alongside experienced chefs and kitchen staff, often involving rotation through different kitchen stations to develop a well-rounded skill set. Interns typically receive direct mentorship from senior chefs who provide feedback on technique, timing, and kitchen best practices. You’ll have the opportunity to observe and participate in day-to-day kitchen operations, from preparing ingredients to plating dishes. This immersive experience helps build confidence and can be a strong stepping stone for advancing to higher-level culinary roles after the internship.

Job description

Description

If you are a chef-leader ready to make your mark through creativity, leadership, and execution, we invite you to apply and lead the next era of Spirits & Tales.

Spirits & Tales is a destination rooftop dining experience located on the 10th floor of The Oaklander Hotel, known for elevated cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and sweeping views of Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. The restaurant has been described as a modern brasserie with hyperlocal ingredients, seasonal menus, and a unique sense of place.

We are seeking a visionary, hands-on Executive Chef to lead the next chapter of Spirits & Tales through a full culinary relaunch. This is a rare opportunity to reinvent menus, elevate the dining concept, drive banquet excellence, and position the restaurant as one of Pittsburgh's premier culinary destinations.

The Executive Chef will oversee all culinary operations for the restaurant, Spirits & Tales, in-room dining, and hotel banquet/catering functions. This leader will be responsible for reimagining the food identity of Spirits & Tales through innovative new menus, refreshed concepts, operational excellence, and an energized kitchen culture.

The ideal candidate is both a creative chef and strong business operator-someone who can deliver exceptional guest experiences while controlling costs, developing talent, and executing flawless events.

Concord Hospitality is seeking a creative and experienced Executive Chef to lead our culinary team and elevate the dining experience across our hotel. The ideal candidate is a hands-on, visionary leader who excels in team development, food quality, cost management, and innovation in culinary operations.

As a Concord Leader you will be responsible to:

  • Inspire greatness in your team.
  • Encourage and support team members to reach their full potential.
  • Create a work environment that is a Great Place to Work for all.
  • Lead with integrity, transparency, respect, and professionalism.
  • Care for your team and their families.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Culinary Leadership & Restaurant Relaunch
    • Lead the complete redesign and relaunch of all restaurant menus and culinary concepts.
    • Develop seasonal, trend-forward offerings that align with the elevated identity of Spirits & Tales.
    • Create signature dishes that drive destination dining and repeat local business.
    • Partner with beverage leadership on food and cocktail pairing experiences.
    • Maintain consistent quality, presentation, and execution standards.
    • Oversee all banquet culinary execution for weddings, corporate functions, social events, and VIP experiences.
    • Design profitable banquet menus and customizable event packages.
    • Ensure seamless execution of events ranging from intimate dinners to large-scale functions.
    • Collaborate closely with sales, convention services, and hotel leadership.
    • Recruit, train, mentor, and inspire kitchen leaders and line-level culinary talent.
    • Build a culture of accountability, creativity, urgency, and respect.
    • Manage scheduling, labor productivity, coaching, and succession planning.
    • Establish strong communication between front and back of house teams.
    • Manage food cost, labor cost, purchasing, and inventory controls.
    • Build systems that maximize profitability without sacrificing quality.
    • Ensure sanitation, safety, and regulatory compliance at all times.
    • Analyze trends, guest feedback, and P&L performance to improve results.

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of Executive Chef or Senior Sous Chef leadership in upscale dining, lifestyle hotel, or high-volume restaurant environments.
    • Proven success opening, relaunching, or repositioning restaurant concepts.
    • Strong banquet/catering production experience required.
    • Excellent leadership, coaching, and people-development skills.
    • Strong financial acumen including food cost, labor management, and forecasting.
    • Passion for hospitality, innovation, and guest experience.
    • Culinary degree preferred but not required with equivalent experience.

    What Success Looks Like

    • Successfully relaunch menus and culinary identity for Spirits & Tales.
    • Improve guest satisfaction scores and online reputation.
    • Increase restaurant covers, banquet revenue, and profitability.
    • Build a high-performing, stable culinary team.
    • Establish Spirits & Tales as a top dining destination in Pittsburgh.

    Benefits

We offer competitive wages and a comprehensive benefits package for full-time associates, including:

    • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
    • Life insurance and short/long-term disability options
    • 401(k) program with company match

    • Discounted room rates at Concord-managed hotels and Marriott hotels worldwide
    • Training & development opportunities
    • Career advancement within our growing portfolio
