Job description

Job Title: Per Diem Medical Coding Manager
Location: Carthage, NY
Pay Range: $47.67 – $63.17 / hour

(CRITICAL MUST-HAVES) Minimum Requirements

Applicants without the following extensive coding and leadership experience will not be considered:

  • Core Coding Experience: Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience handling concurrent hospital inpatient (technical) and outpatient professional fee coding (inpatient and Rural Helath Clinic experience preferred and will be prioritized when interviewing candidates)
  • Leadership Experience: Minimum 2+ years of direct supervisory or management experience overseeing medical coding teams and clinical auditing workflows
  • Active Certification: High-level coding credential required (CCS or CPC) 
  • Systems Mastery: Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS Level II, MS/APR-DRGs, and APCs

Job Summary

The Medical Coding Manager plans, organizes, and manages the daily operations of the coding unit. This leader ensures accurate coded data for optimal hospital reimbursement and coordinates all quality and compliance monitoring for hospital and professional technical services.

Core Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Oversee daily operations, workload, staffing, hiring, training, and performance appraisals.
  • Financial Management: Assist with unit budgeting and aggressively monitor/maintain acceptable accounts receivables for un-coded charts.
  • Compliance & Auditing: Conduct coding audits, report noncompliance, and implement corrective action plans for claim denials and rejections.
  • Trend Analysis: Run trend analyses on coding practices and case-mix-index, comparing profiles against national and regional norms.
  • Provider Relations: Manage compliant, non-leading physician queries and deliver impactful clinical documentation feedback to staff and physicians.

Preferred Skills & Education

  • Education: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, business, or a related field (equivalent direct coding leadership experience accepted).
  • Tech Proficiency: Deep operational familiarity with hospital EHR systems (Epic or Cerner) and Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC) software.
  • Advanced Credentials: Specialty auditing or outpatient credentials preferred (CPMA, CIC, COC).

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
