Job description
The Pediatric Trauma Program Manager reports directly to the Director of Trauma, Burn and Children's Surgery Verification. The primary responsibility of the Pediatric Trauma Program Manager is to coordinate the ACS-COT Level 1 Trauma Verification Site Visit. The Pediatric Trauma Program Manager is responsible for the organization of services and systems necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to provide quality care to the injured pediatric patient. The Pediatric Trauma Program Manager assumes day-to-day responsibility for process and performance improvement activities as they relate to nursing and ancillary medical personnel and assists the Pediatric Trauma Medical Director in carrying out the same functions for the physicians.
Because of the complex needs of multisystem pediatric trauma patients, there is a need to centralize the coordination of pediatric trauma care in Southern New England, to improve the seamless transition from inpatient care to home, and to provide improved long-term follow-up for complex injuries. The Pediatric Trauma Program Manager will be in charge of coordinating care amongst the various surgical and medical specialists, rehabilitation services, primary care physicians, and the family; coordinating continuity of care during the transition from inpatient to outpatient care; providing feedback to primary care physicians on the progress of their patients during their recovery; and providing feedback to the Pediatric Trauma Committee on patient care issues that lead to unplanned access to health care (ED visits, hospital readmissions).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinate the Pediatric ACS Level 1 Trauma Center verification
- Identify opportunities to improve care of the trauma patient through attendance at divisional meetings and document these issues in the Trauma Registry database
- Monitor clinical processes, outcomes and system issues related to the quality of care provided.
- Maintains the documentation of these PI issues and plans in an organized, traceable format.
- Develops focused review presentations for PI filters that exceed established thresholds and presents to Pediatric Trauma Committee
- Develop quality filters, audits and case reviews to identify trends and sentinel events, and assist in developing corrective activities.
- Collaborate with various disciplines and departments to develop action plans of identified issues
- Present the issues, evaluation and action plan to the Director of Trauma, Burn and Children's Surgery Verification, TMD and Trauma Committee members
- Serve as an internal resource for staff and act as an extended liaison for Emergency Services agencies.
- Coordinate the monthly multidisciplinary patient quality of care meeting that evaluates pediatric trauma cases and follow-up.
- Oversee and/or participate in direct community trauma education and injury prevention programs.
- Coordinate educational opportunities for professional staff development related to trauma care.
- Planning and implementation of practice management guidelines and clinical protocols.
- Serve as a liaison to administration and represent the pediatric trauma program on various hospital and community committees.
- Participate in the development of a trauma care system at the state level.
- Monitor and evaluate that positive substance abuse screenings trigger a substance abuse consult.
Coordination of Patient Care
- Assist with scheduling of follow-up visits with surgical and medical specialists, fielding calls from primary care physicians
- Maintaining contact with surgical/medical specialists, parents/patients, and primary physicians
- Assist with scheduling of follow-up imaging and other additional tests
- Coordination among multiple consultants
- Generating summary letters for complex post-injury condition that may require multi-specialty follow-up and care
- Notification of sub-acute rehabilitation facilities of the complex care needs, for selected cases
- Referral of selected patients (PTSD, persistent concussion symptoms) to outpatient evaluation, as needed
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing required, Master of Science in Nursing (or equivalent) preferred.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State or in another state that participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- AHA Basic Life Support (CPR)
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
- Minimum of 3 years relevant pediatric and trauma care experience with demonstrated clinical and leadership skills.
- Experience in Healthcare Quality/Process Improvement
- Excellent interpersonal skills required to work with various levels of professionals
- Knowledge of database management and Microsoft Office Suite required
- Ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization.
- Work requires high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and ability to function independently.
