Job Summaryย 

The Controllerย is responsible forย overseeing the company's accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reportingย for a group of 50+ entities and 80+ employees. This role manages a team of two-to-threeย (one part-time team member),ย distributing and overseeing daily accounting tasks, while reporting directly to the VP of Finance on financial performance, reporting, and strategic initiatives. The Controller oversees payroll processes โ€” including payroll tax compliance โ€” and loan compliance, and is expected to bring a modern, efficient approach to accounting operations, including the use of AI tools to build and improve systems and processes.ย

Duties & Responsibilitiesย 

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and month-end closeย 

  • Manage, mentor, and delegate tasks to a team of accountants (2-3)ย 

  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statementsย 

  • Prepare and presentย accurateย monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to the VP of Financeย 

  • Oversee payrollย auditing,ย approval, billing, and accounting, including payroll tax compliance, to ensureย accuracy andย timelyย payment to employeesย 

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with loan covenants and requirementsย 

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and internal financial policiesย 

  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes in partnership with the VP of Financeย 

  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assetsย 

  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax preparers, and other outside financial partnersย 

  • Identifyย and implement opportunities to improve accounting processes and systems, including the use of AI tools to build more efficient workflowsย 

  • Manage a variety of projects across accounting, reporting, and process improvement as requested by the VP of Financeย 

Required & Preferred Skillsย 

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP) and financial reportingย 

  • Proven ability to manage and develop a small accounting teamย 

  • Experience with payroll processes, including payroll tax complianceย 

  • Experience with loan compliance and covenant reportingย 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excelย 

  • Comfortable using AI tools and building systems/processes with AIย 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skillsย 

  • High attention to detail and accuracyย 

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage a variety of projects at onceย 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present financial information clearly to leadershipย 

  • Ability toย maintainย confidentiality and exercise sound judgmentย 

  • Fund or investment accounting experience preferred

Education & Experienceย 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fieldย requiredย 

  • CPA and/orย Masterโ€™sย degree preferredย 

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience preferred, including prior supervisory or team lead experienceย 

  • Real estate or property management industry experience preferred (Entrata software)ย 

  • Experience with payroll systems and payroll tax compliance preferredย
