Job Description

The Chief Science Officer is responsible for the supervision, direction, and coordination of the medical lab. The supervisor assures compliance with applicable regulations regarding laboratory operations. This position requires patience, empathy, time management, and professionalism with superiors, peers, and providers.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform PCR runs, analyze data, and prepare technical reports according to standard operating procedures.

·        Competent in performing molecular techniques- nucleic acid extraction (both manual and automated), various PCR techniques including RT-PCR set-up, standardization, and validation procedures.

·        Exhibits and demonstrates a leadership style that promotes the company and adheres to the highest ethical standards and management philosophies.

  • Performs routine tests as required and develops knowledge of more complex tests as needed.
  • Direct supervision of all laboratory personnel. Evaluates qualifications of potential employees; conducts interviews and makes hiring recommendations; monitors and evaluates performance. Trains lab personnel. Provides continuing education and monitors laboratory personnel participation. Schedules staff and directly supervises day-to-day testing and reporting.
  • Develops, implements, monitors, and utilizes appropriate systems for specimen collection, processing, recording of results, and quality control. This includes the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of such systems.
  • Establishes and monitors policies and procedures for overall testing performance. Evaluate and validate all test methods. Writes new test procedures and maintains a current procedure manual.
  • Establishes and monitors quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, and routine maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Reviews patient test results, quality control, proficiency testing, and maintenance records. Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the LIS is properly functioning.
  • Maintains and oversees maintenance of test equipment and instruments to ensure accuracy.
  • Maintains awareness of and compliance with state and federal OSHA regulations, laboratory operations, laboratory licensing, and other safety regulations.
  • Complies with Infection Control and OSHA Regulations (biomedical wastes, handling, and disposal).
  • Maintains employee health records when mandated.
  • Maintains a clean working environment and restocks the laboratory area as needed.

  • Participates in site-specific daily operations, communications, and patient flow.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of applicable labor laws.
  • Performs, organizes, and streamlines operational tasks to reduce the potential for errors.
  • Performs other projects or special assignments as required.
  • Maintains patient safety and confidentiality at all times.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director and/or COO.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 2 years of experience in high-complexity laboratory testing.

  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Excellent customer service and phone etiquette.
  • Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow.
  • Computer proficiency and prior experience with LIS/LIMS
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

EDUCATION

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, or a related field.
