Job Description
The National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA), a §501(c)(3) organization, is the nation’s leading provider of legal advocacy skills training and is based in Louisville, Colorado.

Salary Range $87,630 - $105,000
Reports to Associate Executive Director- Finance
Work Location: Remote


Position Purpose
In collaboration with the finance, business service, program and publication teams, the controller will oversee and manage financial processes to assure accurate financial records and timely month-end close process, customer billings, accounts receivable, royalty payments, tax reporting, and accounts payable process. NITA uses Salesforce as its CRM system and Accounting Seed, native to the Salesforce platform, for accounting functions. The controller is a key member of the staff team to develop a deep understanding of these systems, updates, and overall business processes controls, development, and improvements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as overall lead on financial transactions and processes.
  • Manage the month-end closing process to include reconciliations for balance sheet accounts (including bank and investment accounts) and significant revenue accounts.
  • In collaboration with the business support/accounting assistant, manage daily sales order transactions to process billings and refunds, assure accurate coding, tax calculations, and correct period posting.
  • Process custom order client billings to include contract review, recalculation of fees, and general ledger research to assure all passthrough expenses are properly included on the invoice.
  • In collaboration with members of the publications team, ensure publications sales from internal and external sources are properly recorded and the correct royalty accruals are made.
  • Manage the accounts receivable subledger for accuracy, processing refunds, and communication with clients for invoicing and collections.
  • Manage recording of cash receipts from credit cards, checks and ACH deposits.
  • Reconcile cash receipts from credit card transactions.
  • Provide oversite for daily cash report to assure accuracy.
  • Review accounts payable for coding and period posting accuracy.
  • Manage biannual royalty statement processing and payments.
  • Manage accounting functions for supporting The NITA Foundation to include donations, transfers between NITA and The NITA Foundation, and investment earnings/loss allocations to endowment funds.
  • Proactively identify risks and areas of improvement and make recommendations.
  • Continuously analyze transactional processes and systems for efficiency and accuracy improvements.
  • Maintain current standard operating procedure documentation.
  • Participate in or lead departmental and cross-departmental projects; identify and communicate the impact of new programs or system changes on existing financial processes.
  • Participate in special projects.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provide support and supervision to the payroll coordinator/GL accountant for accounts payable processing.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:   Degree in Accounting
Experience: 
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience, preferably in a non-profit environment with earned revenue.
  • Demonstrated experience with systems implementation and improvement processes.
  • Experience with full general ledger responsibility required.
  • Experience in a changing environment desired.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Must be self-motivated, have strong organizational skills, possess the ability to self-manage, maintain positivity, have a high degree of integrity, dependability and participate as a team member to achieve common goals with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to streamline processes, problem-solve, and have a strong internal and external customer service orientation.
  • Knowledge of Salesforce and Accounting Seed experience a plus
  • Strong Excel skills necessary
  • Skill with Office 365
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Physical Demands to Perform Essential Duties
  • Uses hands, fingers and wrists to write and work with computers and office machines
  • Sits and work at a computer for extended periods of time
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
