Description:

Summary: Under the direction of the Project Manager (or Designee), the Project Engineer is responsible for efficiently managing the flow of information and documentation on a designated construction project. This role ensures adherence to company policies, procedures, and project goals.


General Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Project Manager and Superintendent in achieving project completion within specified timelines and budget constraints.
  • Organize and manage project documentation to support the project schedule.
  • Provide regular updates to the project team regarding the status of documentation workflows.
  • Support the Project Manager in fostering positive relationships with the ownership team and consultants.

Project Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Review and comprehend pre-construction planning and documentation for the project.
  • Familiarize oneself with the terms and obligations outlined in the general contract agreement between owner and contractor.
  • Understand the relationships and obligations between the contractor and all project design, engineering, and development consultants.
  • Review all subcontract agreements and major supplier purchase orders to ensure compliance with contractual terms.
  • Gain thorough familiarity with project plans, specifications, and requirements.
  • Organize construction plans and specifications both physically on site and within project document control software.
  • Receive and organize changes to plans and specifications issued by architects and consultants, distributing them to relevant stakeholders.
  • Manage cost changes resulting from alterations to plans and specifications and Requests for Information (RFIs) from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Review subcontractor and supplier change order requests for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist in the creation of detailed RFIs with necessary supporting documentation using project management software.
  • Submit RFIs to architects and designated reviewers, tracking their progress and responses.
  • Manage RFI tracking logs and produce updated reports for the project team.
  • Identify RFIs with potential cost and schedule impacts and alert project team members.
  • Coordinate initial submittal schedules, reviewing them for completeness and compliance with contract documents.
  • Collect and organize required submittal documents and materials from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Facilitate the review and approval process of submittal documents with architects and designated reviewers.
  • Track submittal workflows and identify any potential schedule impacts.
  • Assist in preparing monthly payment applications to the owner and subcontractors.
  • Review vendor invoices for approval and proper cost coding.
  • Attend and document project team meetings and OAC (Owner, Architect, Contractor) meetings.
  • Collect, organize, and track all project close-out documentation.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Preferred prior experience in construction administration.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college-level courses in construction management or related fields preferred.
  • Some knowledge of the building industry is desirable.
  • OSHA 30-hour and CPR/First-Aid certifications are advantageous.
  • LEED credentials are a plus.
  • Valid CA driver’s license required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and construction project management software.

Skills

  • Understand and perform basic mathematical functions including equations, fractions, percentages, ratios and fundamental geometry, and apply these concepts as necessary to analyze company-wide situations

Work Environment

  • Perform job duties in a professional office environment on a construction site where standard office equipment is routinely used
  • Regularly traverse project sites, including the interior and exterior of buildings, while under construction
  • Periodically travel to company office
  • Periodically travel to visit clients, partners, vendors and consultants as required
  • Travel to other construction job sites on as-needed basis
  • Travel to meetings at off-site locations as required
  • The physical demands of this position include sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing stairs and ladders, using hands and fingers to operate office equipment, speaking, hearing, seeing, driving a motor vehicle, occasionally lifting and moving up to 25 pounds (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential physical functions)
  • Follow all safety requirements related to the performance of assigned duties including the handling and operating of company provided tools, equipment and vehicles
  • This is a full-time exempt management position for which occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties may demand
