Job Description
The controller reports to the Movement Schools CEO and will lead and manage all daily accounting operations, audit, monthly financial reporting including to state and federal agencies, and annual budgeting for a growing $20 million Annual revenue budget.
This is a newly created position for a growing organization and the ideal candidate will thrive in an entrepreneurial culture. The controller will be responsible for implementing efficient technology together with adequate procedures and controls to ensure timely and pristine accounting records as well budgets and dashboards that will inform the strategic direction of the organization leadership team.
This role will be responsible over time to hire and manage additional staff responsible for overall school budgeting, accounting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.

Core responsibilities include:
Finance and Accounting Management:
- Manage month-end and year-end closing process
- Set up for growth and supervise the daily operations of the accounting department including control systems, transaction-processing, and policies and procedures
- Maintain a well-documented system of accounting policies and procedures consistent with GAAP, GASB, and/or FASB as applicable for an North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia non-profit public schools
- Manage school cash and plan liquidity needs
- Review accounts payable and accounts receivable batches prior to posting and processing, process adjustments and other journal entries as needed
- Conducts research on educational laws and trends that pertain to the department as needed
- Be the point of contact for employees and our 3rd party payroll processing business partner
- Record the minutes of Finance Committee meetings and make them available according to regulations
- Conduct periodic internal audits to ensure compliance with cash, grant accounting, and accounts payable/receivable policies and procedures
- Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
- Safeguard assets and ensure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of internal audits, controls and checks across all departments
- Serve as the primary contact during audit season for all audit requests, in coordination with the managing director of finance (including the workers' compensation audit)
- Develop, improve and issue timely and complete financial statements for both internal external stakeholders
- Create and update budget cost workbooks to assist with budget management
- Manage the annual budget and quarterly forecast processes
- Review budget variances and report significant issues to management
- Complete the necessary reporting requirements as the coordinator
- Create and submit mandated state reports
- Assist with child nutrition submission of monthly claims
- Ensure accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
- Ensure W9 forms and certificates of insurance are on file
- Process 1099s and 1096 annually
- Ensure accounts receivable are collected promptly
- Ensure that revenue is recognized accurately and in the correct accounting period
- Issue report, review, and verify donations with the External Affairs Team to ensure accurate reporting
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
- Five to ten years of experience leading the accounting and financial reporting duties with a North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia school organization or non profit preferred
- Technology savvy to efficiently and effectively manage data for financial reporting
- Demonstrated success in developing and monitoring systems to manage internal operations and processes to meet monthly, quarterly and annual deadlines
- Goal oriented, deadline driven team player with strong organizational skills and attention to details; strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to translate financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
