Position Overview

The Shop Supervisor will report directly to Southern Region Shop Operations Manager to ensure a seamless process of shop scheduling and work accomplishments, relating to Sacramento PRS, Sacramento PCC, and Bakersfield PRS. The primary function and focus of the Shop Supervisor are to manage and conduct oversite of shop safety, shop personnel, DOT compliance-reporting, parts procurement, hands-on maintenance and repairs of fleet vehicles and equipment scheduled for work.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, support and/or implement employee training, shop safety programs Fed/Cal OSHA standards, tool inventory and accountability procedures, Quality Assurance/Quality Control program, and inspections and certifications. Advocate and enforce a world-class culture of safety and quality
  • Provide leadership, including planning, directing, organizing, and influencing the work of others
  • Provides direct supervision of the Shop Operations area to include the shops and field site locations and all other areas where fleet equipment or personnel may be dispatched or found.
  • Supervise parts operations to ensure effective parts management at multiple shop locations. Ensure adherence with proper business controls, periodic cycle counts and annual inventories in compliance with established procedures. Vendor oversight and management for parts and service analysis and/or accountability. Identifies, and procures all tools, storage and/or other shop related equipment.
  • Required to supervise daily assignment of work for all NorCal Shop personnel both Sacramento, Reno, and Bakersfield shop/field locations.
  • Works closely with the Shop Operations Manager to ensure a complimentary and cohesive process for in-servicing, scheduling vehicle(s) and equipment repairs; warranty parts and repairs, rapid turnaround of vehicles and equipment, and quality assurance/ quality control procedures are in place and functioning properly.
  • Indirect responsibilities for supporting the development of the annual budget for the Fleet Maintenance Operations Division by providing supporting information, internal goal development and training / tools support information.
  • Has primary responsibility or oversight of compliance and/or violations within the shop.
  • Reviews internal and externally completed work for timeliness, completeness, accuracy, and quality. Coordinates and oversees outside fleet repairs through the vendor support systems. Verifies vendor compliance with all internal policies as well as DVIR’s, BIT’s, CARB (smoke tests) and/or other compliance requirements.
  • Identifies and assigns vehicle mechanics to specific tasks identified by FLEETIO and SALUS through work orders, issues, service reminders and field audits.
  • Manage Shift Scheduling, overtime, vacation/PTO, performance evaluations, and reviews.
  • Makes procedural and operational recommendations to the Management and supervises changes in organization and administrative operation of the shop area as directed.
  • Develops and reviews training requirements for mechanics to keep pace with the maintenance requirements of new vehicles/equipment, shop tools, and equipment.
  • Serves as a member of the Shop management team, communicates key organizational issues to staff and relays employee issues to Shop Manager.
  • Responsible for and/or performs duties in support of subordinate personnel as needed.
  • Developing, implementing, and supporting Shop Management goals, projects, and initiatives.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned and any omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Ability to follow safe work practices and wear all required personal protection equipment for the task (safety glasses/shield, hardhat, safety boots and gloves)

  • Experience in troubleshooting, vehicle service, and repair issues
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to develop and/or write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively collect and/or present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to develop and/or interpret graphs.
  • Ability to analyze and explain records, reports, and procedures to others.
  • Requires sound judgment regarding use of equipment, tools, material, and manpower.
  • Computer skills for research, training, and the reporting of data; PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook are required. (OEM systems, FLEETIO, SALUS, SAMSARA, D365, WITOS, WIDOS, JDLINK, INSITE, CAT ET, or other fleet mgmt. systems is preferred)
  • Ability to work overtime if necessary.

Education and experince

  • Obtain OEM training certificate
  • 5+ years of experience field leadership and equipment maintenance
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have direct knowledge of and/or skill in the operation of motorized vehicles and heavy equipment for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer; calculator; phone
  • ASE certified Master Technician in auto and truck fields is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of California BIT, CARB, AQMD, EPA, DOT, and OSHA standards as it is related to job requirements and/or fleet operations
  • Fleet management certification, training, knowledge, or experience is preferred
  • Leadership/management training certificate
