Director of Development


Position: Director of Development


Reports to: Executive Director


Position Overview: In partnership with the Board of Directors and the Executive Director, the Director of Development provides strategic leadership for Flance's fundraising and advancement efforts. The Development Director plans, implements, and manages the organization's contributed revenue and relationship-generating activities, including but not limited to institutional, individual, and online giving, corporate sponsorships and special events. They also supervise the Communications and Volunteer Manager (full-time person).


Responsibilities of the Director of Development

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Serve as part of the senior management team to ensure organizational health and effectiveness:
    • Participate with the senior staff and board in defining and communicating the organization's values, mission, and vision.
    • Provide vital input for short and long term strategic and operational planning and positioning within the organization.
    • Serve as an organizational ambassador, nurturing community relationships and identifying individuals for board candidacy, advisory committee, task force groups, and other volunteer positions.
    • Foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization and create a donor-centered organization that nurtures loyalty through a comprehensive relationship building program including cultivation, stewardship and communications.

Fundraising and External Affairs:

  • With the Executive Director and development team establish an annual development plan with defined fundraising goals.
  • With the development team, create a major giving strategy, which includes the use of "moves management" to meet annual fundraising goals.
  • Build and manage internal and external networks to assist in identification of major gift prospects. With the team, devise and implement strategy for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of these prospects.
  • Design and implement a strategy for external communications, including content on e-blasts, mass mailings, website and social as well as printed marketing materials such as brochures and annual impact report.
  • Oversee a strategy for special events and engagement activities.
  • Oversee the contract grant writer in researching, composing and submitting proposals on a regular and timely basis. This also includes grant tracking and grant reporting.
  • Develop and assist with appropriate volunteer or friend-raising activities.

Cultivation, Solicitation and Stewardship

  • Steward and strengthen relationships with current donors including individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Develop and implement a solicitation strategy for each assigned major gift prospect, including preparation of written proposal informational material, and other materials needed to secure major gifts.

Management, Supervision and Board Relations:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the development function. This includes building a development team that will raise money through grant requests, fundraising events, major gifts and online fundraising.
  • Work with Executive Director to enable board members to fulfill their development roles.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Management skills including short- and long-term planning, evaluation, directing and motivating staff, oral and written communication skills, marketing and financial management, board development and governance.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent writing ability.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Fundraising acumen and passion for our mission.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Constant Contact and donor software preferred.

Environmental Factors:

Indoor, primarily works in an office. Noise and activity levels can be high; staff, visitors, families and children come and go at all times. May have to drop work in order to attend to a crisis. Position requires, health screen, annual Family Safety Registry background check and fingerprinting. Flance Center is a busy, unique environment. Employees are expected to participate fully in the life of the Center. All employees must be able to lift 25 lbs. in the event of an evacuation or emergency.

Education: Bachelor's Degree

Experience: Three years related work experience.
