Packaging Engineer A leading contract manufacturer of various snack food products located in Pittsburgh, PA is seeking an energetic and initiative-taking Packaging Engineer to join our team. The position reports to the Director of Project Management and is responsible for all packaging activities supporting a multi-site manufacturing organization while working closely with the cross functional business team.This is a great role for a candidate looking to make a significant impact in developing and growing a dynamic organization. Definition of Success Lead the design, development, and implementation of packaging across multiple business categories, including innovation, line extensions, maintenance, quality, and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities Provide packaging leadership and technical support to all manufacturing locations Develop and implement packaging tools and processes (packaging capability matrix, film sizing calculator, manufacturing SOP’s, test methods) Design, develop and implement a variety of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components Liaison between the customer and business team for assessing and recommending packaging options Lead and/or support packaging changes on existing business related to graphic refreshes, material structure changes or packaging design format updates Assess, create, and lead continuous improvement packaging initiatives to drive operational efficiencies Lead and/or support plant trials and first production runs Collaborate with suppliers and leverage their resources through the packaging development process Lead and/or support large scale packaging equipment projects from concept to commercialization Generate packaging related documentation, including material specifications, technical protocols/reports, test methods and SOP’s Create and drive a packaging strategy to build a pipeline for continuous improvement and innovation through partnership with the cross functional team Utilize Packaging software (TOPS PRO/CAPE PACK) to optimize designs, create pallet configurations, and determine transportation cargo loads Assist plants with trouble shooting manufacturing challenges related to Packaging Key Competencies Self-Starter: Takes initiative in leading projects and challenges the status quo Problem-Solving: Ability to address technical issues, create solutions, develop risk mitigation plans, and present recommendations to the business teams Results Orientated: Independently drives projects Adaptable / Flexible: Comfortable with change in response to new information or unexpected circumstances Cross-Functional Collaboration: Ability to work in a dynamic team environment Customer Focus: Understands and monitors the needs of internal and external customers Project and Time Management: Accountable for actions, plans tasks accordingly, and prioritizes workload Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging and/or relevant scientific or engineering discipline 2 – 5 year’s related experience in Packaging Experience working in a manufacturing environment Technical understanding of packaging materials and formats, including film, paperboard and corrugated Technical understanding of packaging equipment, including wrappers, cartoners, palletizers and robotic packaging Ability to multi-task and operate in a fast-paced environment Detailed orientated and strong organizational skills Solid problem-solving skills Ability to communicate to customers clearly and professionally as a representative of the company Understanding of ASTM/ISTA testing requirements and quality standards Ability to experiment and make data-based recommendations Proficient in MS Office suite Proficient in TOPS PRO or CAPE PACK software The ideal candidate is available for travel and possible relocation.
