Job description

Lead Packaging Engineer
Job Summary
Responsible for the design, development and management of packaging solutions for Bostik's Consumer and Construction business in North America. Will work to identify, plan and implement packaging innovation opportunities including supporting new product development and cost reduction efforts. Will work with a variety of internal functional groups including supply chain, operations (production, safety, and PSRA), marketing, as well as external partners including customers, packaging vendors and regulatory agencies. This role effectively manages the product data related to packaging in SAP and other business systems. Will continuously monitor the market environment and identify trends or market shifts which could create opportunities or threats for Bostik.
  • This person is accountable for timely and professional management of all packaging projects and will contribute to the growth of Bostik's North America business through both business development (new products) and cost savings.
  • The position will manage all technical (engineering) and administrative tasks relative to packaging for Bostik products within the North America region.
  • The position will be located in Wauwatosa, WI, but candidates close to Radnor, PA or one of the Bostik manufacturing sites in Southeastern U.S. will be considered as well.
  • Must be able to travel as required for internal meetings (manufacturing plants) and external meetings (suppliers) and potentially to customer locations

Essential Duties & Responsibilities with % Breakdown:
Packaging Development- 40%
  • Develop and design packages for adhesives, sealants, powders, and water-based products in cost effective manner
  • Responsible for optimization and de-bottlenecking of packaging processes
  • Conduct performance testing of all product packages
  • Provide troubleshooting support related to packaging for production and shipping
  • Support the development, definition and maintenance of process instructions that include the packaging of products
  • Responsible for managing and validating packaging data / specifications in business systems (SAP and Material Data Planning)

Packaging conformance to company, regulatory and customer standards - 40%
  • Assure compliance of package to DOT requirements for Hazardous and Non-Hazardous shipments
  • Working with Regulatory team, assessing compliance levels of Bostik's current packaging portfolio, ensure compliance on an ongoing basis, and recommend projects for improvement; monitor the regulatory landscape for changes and potential impact on the product portfolio, especially focusing on the sustainability of packaging options and compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility
  • Ensure compliance with Quality Standard Procedures and Work instructions when necessary for ISO or other quality management systems
  • Respond to Non-Conforming Material Requests and customer quality complaints related to packaging
  • Practice safe work habits in accordance with OSHA and EPA guidelines, and Bostik specific EHS expectations
  • Assure that proper labels meet EH&S customer requirements
  • Works with marketing and operations to ensure proper specifications, die-lines, and artwork with the vendors

Improvement opportunities - 20%
  • Assist manufacturing plants in packaging line including throughput enhancement, efficiency improvements, including SKU reduction, cost reduction, energy and waste optimization, and similar as relevant to packaging areas
  • Scout new packaging innovations in adhesives and other related markets and assess suitability for Bostik's portfolio, includes monitoring competitor activity, evaluating sustainable packaging solutions, and working with packaging technology consultants/service providers where appropriate
  • Work with marketing, sales, sourcing, and supply chain on new packaging opportunities relative to new product development, including vendor selection and packaging specification identification
  • Keep abreast of packaging developments in the other regions

Minimum Qualifications and Education Required
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in package engineering
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Package Design, or a related field (advanced degree is a plus)
  • Adhesive experience a plus

Competencies -Knowledge Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
Experience in Hazardous Product Shipment requirements
Knowledge of Design of Experiments and Statistical Process Control is a plus
Excellent verbal / written communication and interpersonal skills is necessary
Experience working cross-functionally with supply chain, marketing, sales, and operations
Proven analytical/problem-solving skills
Strong computer skills - PLC, data analysis
Ability to travel Domestic and International at least 25% of the time
