The Staff Packaging Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining packaging methods, techniques, processes, and tooling for fabricated parts, components, subassemblies, and final products. This role goes beyond packaging design-it encompasses full accountability for development deliverables, including test methods, validation techniques, and process documentation. The incumbent serves as the coordinating lead to ensure that when new products or enhancements to existing ones are introduced, all manufacturing and packaging requirements are met throughout the entire development and production lifecycle.
This position reports to the Senior Manager Package Engineering and is part of the Global Engineering team located in Chaska, MN and will be an on-site role in one of our locations in Chaska, MN; Hebron, KY, Miami, FL, or Sacramento, CA.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Design and validate packaging solutions for new products and enhancements, ensuring compliance with ISTA, ASTM, DOT, and global regulatory standards.
  • Develop and maintain packaging documentation, including engineering drawings using SolidWorks and CAD conversions, while leading design reviews, inspections, and MRB processes.
  • Serve as primary packaging lead on development projects, applying DFM and DFT principles, managing project plans, timelines, and deliverables, and collaborating cross-functionally with Quality, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and suppliers.
  • Execute testing and validation protocols, including UN4G and regulatory compliance testing for global distribution requirements, and provide technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, reducing packaging waste, optimizing material usage, and mentoring technical staff; may supervise or assign work as needed.

The essential requirements of the job include:
  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering with 7+ years in packaging engineering within a regulated industry (medical device, pharmaceutical, or similar).
  • Technical Expertise: Proven ability in packaging design, validation, and compliance testing; proficiency in SolidWorks and CAD systems; deep knowledge of ISTA, ASTM, DOT standards, global regulatory requirements, packaging materials, fabrication, and molding processes; familiarity with ISO and GMP compliance.
  • Analytical & Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Communication & Leadership: Excellent collaboration and communication skills; demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, mentor junior engineers, and manage multiple projects independently.
  • Continuous Improvement & Sustainability: Experience driving process improvements and sustainability initiatives to optimize efficiency and reduce waste.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
  • Worked with automated filling lines including case erecting, case sealing, filling, capping, and robotic palletization.
  • Cold Chain / Thermodynamics experience and knowledge.
  • Experience with cushion curves and evaluating multiple materials to meet performance requirements; working through instrument damage boundary testing and analysis.

The annual salary range OR the hourly range for this role is $140K - $160K. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.
This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
