Job Description
Salary: $100,000 - $135,000 per year

Founded in 1999, Access Laser is a leader in designing and manufacturing high-end CO2 lasers. We are a rapidly growing company, experiencing double-digit revenue growth in recent years. We provide leading-edge gas-discharge-excited laser technologies to global industries in the medical, semiconductor, electronic, manufacturing, and scientific development R&D markets. We focus on creative designs that match our customers’ applications and solve difficult problems with innovative solutions. We strive to provide a challenging and supportive environment where team members are encouraged to go beyond ordinary thinking and challenge the normal with the truly ingenious. Our team is our greatest asset and supporting their career development is the greatest investment we can make in our future.

In October 2017 we became a member of the TRUMPF Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of lasers and laser systems. Although we have retained the agility and flexibility of a small company, both our business and our employees now have access to new opportunities for growth.

Access Laser Company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to develop precision opto-mechanical assemblies for RF excited molecular gas lasers and accessories.

Primary Duties:

  • Lead and/or contribute to designing, prototyping, and testing mechanical components, subassemblies, and packaged laser solutions in support of new product development.
  • Create drawings and work with machinists and other team members on early prototypes to validate your design.
  • Utilize both photonics and mechanical engineering principles to meet product requirements.
  • Document new designs by entering BOM and design data into Agile PLM system.

Other Important Duties:

  • Participate in all concept, preliminary, and critical, design reviews of the Engineering Department.
  • Drive the adoption of best practices related to design for manufacturing to assist in the transition of photonics prototypes to production.
  • Assist with regulatory compliance for new products as it relates to mechanical characteristics such as shock and vibration.
  • Support production by designing test fixtures and writing incoming inspection procedures.
  • Write test reports for prototype, first article, and design verification tests.
  • Participate in visits to key customers and vendors, which will include international travel.

Standard Job Requirements:

  • BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering—background in Physics or other Engineering disciplines will also be considered if coupled with substantial experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 7-15 years of experience in laser precision mechanical and/or opto-mechanical engineering, including experience at a supervisory level.
  • Experience in design for test (DFT) and manufacturing (DFM).
  • Demonstrated experience in opto-mechanical design, structural mechanics, vacuum systems, thermal analysis, and cooling technologies.
  • Experience with engineering projects from conception to implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of various fabrication techniques (machining, extrusion, EDM, brazing, etc.).
  • An understanding of best practices for dimensioning and tolerancing to a level necessary for mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Practical experience with regulatory compliance, especially as it relates to vibration and shock isolation.
  • Hands-on skills in using hand tools, power tools, and machine shop equipment (mills, lathes, drill presses and CNC machines).
  • Skilled with CAD software (SolidWorks, ProE, AutoCAD, or similar).
  • Experience writing technical reports.
  • Experience using Six Sigma tools such as FMEA, DOE, and Process Maps

Highly Desirable Additional Skills/Experience:

  • An additional degree in the above disciplines, including master’s, doctorate, or related areas of study.
  • Experience with hard-seal technologies.
  • Experience with CTE matching of dissimilar materials.
  • Practical experience designing with the principles of fluid dynamics.
  • Experience with piezoelectric-mechanical design, kinematics, or micro-motion/manipulation.
  • Experience with photonics or optics design which may include software such as ZEMAX
  • Experience in the usage of coatings for dry lubrication, EMI shielding, Light absorption, or thermal management.
  • Certified in SolidWorks (CSWP or CSWE).
  • Expertise using COMSOL or a similar Multiphysics simulation tool for FEA, thermal analysis and fluid dynamics.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt.
