Job description

The Role

We are adding a second Laser Cutter Operator to complete a two-person tandem model: one operator programs the next job in TruTops Boost while the other runs the machine, allowing the laser to cut continuously. Both operators are fully capable in both roles and rotate between programming and machine operation.

This position combines programming and machine operation. You will work from a complete shop drawing package (DXF, flat pattern, BOM, cut list, bend sequence sheet) produced from a 3D CAD model, with part numbers embedded in the DXF for automatic laser etching during cutting. The documentation is the source of truth, and following it accurately is essential to maintaining quality.

Responsibilities
  • Review incoming DXF files for laser-specific DFM, including geometry integrity, hole-to-edge clearances, slot widths, and correct MARK layer placement for part number etching.

  • Program nesting jobs in TruTops Boost, including material and parameter setup, part nesting optimized for both material utilization and downstream press brake sequencing, and NC program generation.

  • Operate a CNC fiber laser cutter, including sheet setup, first-article inspection, in-process quality monitoring, and preventive maintenance.

  • Sort cut parts by job using etched part numbers and manage WIP flow to the press brake within established cart limits.

  • Assist with manual press brake setup using bend sequence sheets and learn or utilize offline press brake programming software such as Praxis.

  • Maintain accurate job travelers and update job status in the company's production management system throughout the shift.

Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of hands-on CNC fiber laser operation in a metal fabrication environment (Trumpf, Amada, Bystronic, Mazak, or equivalent).

  • Experience with nesting software. TruTops Boost preferred; experience with SigmaNEST, Lantek, BySoft, or Amada AP100 is also acceptable.

  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and DXF files, including flat patterns, BOM balloon callouts, bend lines, and basic GD&T.

  • Working knowledge of sheet metal properties, including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, along with gauge conversions, minimum bend radius, and grain direction.

  • Proficiency using precision measuring tools such as digital calipers, squares, and protractors.

  • High school diploma or GED; technical or vocational manufacturing training is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Trumpf TruLaser systems, TruTops Boost, and TecZone Cut.

  • Knowledge of DXF MARK/ETCH layer conventions for laser part identification.

  • Press brake setup experience and familiarity with Praxis or similar offline press brake programming software.

  • Experience interpreting SolidWorks-generated drawing packages, including BOM tables, cut lists, and exploded assembly views.

  • Experience in a high-mix, low-volume job shop environment with frequent changeovers.

  • Forklift certification or willingness to obtain certification.

Work Environment
  • Manufacturing shop environment with metal dust, filtered laser exhaust, noise, and heat. PPE is required, including safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand or walk for extended periods throughout the shift.

  • Full-time, on-site position in the Tacoma, WA area. Shift schedule to be determined based on production needs.
