Job description

CIM Metals is seeking a skilled CNC Laser Operator to join our manufacturing team. The ideal candidate will have experience operating CNC laser cutting equipment in a metal fabrication environment and be responsible for machine setup, production operation, quality inspection, and troubleshooting.

The CNC Laser Operator will operate advanced laser cutting systems to produce precision metal components while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, and productivity. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to read blueprints, interpret work instructions, and make machine adjustments to ensure accurate production.


Responsibilities

CNC Laser Machine Operation

  • Operate CNC laser cutting machines to produce precision metal parts according to customer specifications
  • Set up and operate fiber laser or CO2 laser cutting equipment
  • Load raw materials including:
    • Carbon steel
    • Stainless steel
    • Aluminum
    • Sheet metal
    • Plate materials
  • Review job orders, drawings, and production requirements before machining
  • Load CNC programs and verify correct cutting parameters
  • Adjust machine settings including:
    • Laser power
    • Cutting speed
    • Gas pressure
    • Focus settings
    • Offsets
    • Nesting parameters
  • Monitor machine operation and make adjustments to maintain part quality
  • Perform machine changeovers and setup adjustments
  • Troubleshoot basic machine issues and communicate problems to maintenance personnel
  • Ensure production goals and schedules are met


Blueprint Reading & Production Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, job travelers, and work instructions
  • Verify material type, thickness, dimensions, and tolerances before cutting
  • Understand part layouts, nesting patterns, and cutting sequences
  • Ensure parts meet customer specifications and quality standards
  • Identify and report defects, machine issues, or material concerns
  • Work closely with fabrication, welding, machining, and quality teams


Quality Control Responsibilities

  • Perform in-process inspections of laser-cut parts
  • Verify dimensions and tolerances using precision measuring tools:
    • Calipers
    • Micrometers
    • Tape measures
    • Height gauges
    • Measuring devices
  • Inspect cut quality including:
    • Edge finish
    • Burrs
    • Cut accuracy
    • Hole quality
    • Part dimensions
  • Complete inspection paperwork and production documentation
  • Maintain consistent quality throughout production runs


Machine Maintenance & Shop Responsibilities

  • Perform daily machine inspections and preventative maintenance tasks
  • Maintain proper laser machine operation and cleanliness
  • Replace consumables such as:
    • Nozzles
    • Lenses
    • Filters
    • Assist gas components
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and adjustments
  • Maintain organized work areas following 5S and lean manufacturing principles
  • Safely handle sheet metal and finished parts
  • Assist with material movement using forklifts, cranes, or material handling equipment when trained


Safety Responsibilities

  • Follow all OSHA and company safety policies
  • Wear required PPE including eye protection, gloves, and safety equipment
  • Follow safe operating procedures for laser cutting equipment
  • Perform lockout/tagout procedures when required
  • Maintain awareness of laser, electrical, and material handling hazards
  • Keep work area clean and free of safety hazards


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience operating CNC machinery, laser cutting equipment, or similar manufacturing equipment
  • Experience in metal fabrication, machining, or manufacturing environment
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Understanding of CNC machine operation and production processes
  • Ability to use precision measuring tools
  • Strong attention to detail and quality focus
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills
