Sr. Accountant

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Senior Accountant supports the overall accounting function, including general ledger postings, reconciliations and reporting. This person also participates in the monthly and annual close in accordance with GAAP, supports the annual audit and assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget. .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintains an accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets and liabilities of the YMCA for all funds. Also maintains systems to track all data required for disclosure in the audited financial statements.
2. Serves as resource to management and program personnel in all matters relating to accounting, cash receipts and cash disbursements.
3. Prepares reconciliations of all YMCA cash, investment and financial asset accounts on a monthly basis.
4. Maintains the accuracy of the general ledger.
5. Supports the monthly preparation of the financial statements required by management, the Board, and outside agencies.
6. Oversees grant reporting and compliance with Federal and State Grants.
7. File property tax forms.
8. In coordination with the external auditors compiles information for the IRS Form 990 tax return.
9. Serves as back up to payroll processing.

• Monitor investment activity and coordinates asset allocation changes and updates with external investment management consultants.
• Conducts special internal audits, accounting studies, analyses and cost studies as required. Provides recommendations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent.
• Understanding of and experience in GAAP are required.
• Experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.
• Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.
• Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems.
• Ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems. Excellent spreadsheet skills are critical.
• CPA or similar accounting certification preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to sit for extended periods at a time.
• Use hands and fingers to manipulate keys on keyboard.
