Job Overview

The role of Chief Engineer is to manage the engineering and maintenance of his or her operating property to ensure the safety and comfort of guests and fellow employees. At Tara we place an emphasis on proactive maintenance of equipment, machinery and property. The Chief Engineer is responsible for the upkeep of the entire property including, but not limited to, the building, furniture, servicing equipment, utilities equipment, parking lots, pool areas and any other property owned by the Hotel. The Chief Engineer should be able to physically fix problems with limited need to outsource to third party vendors. Additionally, we expect that the Chief Engineer should be able to act with limited supervision from the General Manager. This means being proactive in identifying issues, being proactive in getting them fixed and being proactive in communicating and recording progress with the General Manager and the Corporate office.

Duties and Responsibilities

Your responsibilities are diverse in nature and include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete minor repairs such as replacing ceiling tiles, filters, light bulbs, patching vinyl, painting, repairs to pipe lines, toilets, sinks, kitchen and laundry equipment, etc.
  • Perform preventative maintenance duties as detailed in the hotel preventative maintenance calendar. This includes maintaining a detailed preventative maintenance log
  • Ensure that assigned equipment is prepared and operational for the following day’s work
  • Monitor efficiency of equipment and electrical systems such as air conditioning controls, guest entrance/access doors, television sets, lighting systems and make minor repairs and/or replacements to ensure things are working properly and efficiently at all times
  • Refurbish furniture and fixtures within guest rooms such as cabinets, tables, chairs, doors, windows and counters. Paint and finish furniture and fixtures in guest rooms, if needed
  • Maintain front entrance area, parking area and/or garage, and street entrance in a clean and presentable manner
  • Maintain the safety and cleanliness of the exterior of the facility, grounds, pool and exercise/sport facilities (including property signs and lighting)
  • Ensure the security of inventory and assets such as tools, supplies, equipment, furniture, televisions, etc.
  • using established hotel procedures
  • Replenish supplies and inventory in a timely and efficient manner, and minimize waste
  • Follow established safety procedures at all times. Immediately report any health and safety incident, unsafe conditions or malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor or manager on duty

Accountability

The Chief Engineer will report directly to the General Manager and in some cases will be held accountable to the Director of Operations. Primary duties will involve customarily and regularly directing the work of Engineering Assistants and Houseman who will report directly to him/her. With respect to Engineering Assistants he/she will be responsible for assigning technical work to these individuals, monitoring their progress and training them to a point where they could be Chief Engineer’s themselves. With respect to Houseman the Chief Engineer will assign various tasks which may be less technical in nature but still relevant to the maintenance of the building. Primary duties are to include suggesting and recommending direct reports for hiring, firing, advancement and promotion to the General Manager, with his/her recommendation holding particular weight. Given the high replacement value of a hotel, which would be upwards of $10 million, the Chief Engineer must place a significant focus on preventative maintenance and the elimination of potential issues. Primary duties will include the exercise of discretion and independent judgement with respect to matters of significance including the maintenance of the property and cost control. Primary duties include managing the engineering and maintenance department of the property. The Chief Engineer will be part of the senior management team at the hotel and eligible for serving as Manager on Duty.

Qualifications and Requirements

Basic reading, writing and math skills and 1+ year(s) of general building maintenance and repair experience. Completion of high school diploma or related vocational training preferred. Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel is required. Familiarity with Building Management Program and/or any other reporting tools such as HotSos, Opera, Lutron, Bartech, Inncom preferred. If the property has a pool, a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license is preferred.

The Chief Engineer position requires the ability to perform the following:

  • Carrying, lifting, pulling or pushing items weighing up to 100 pounds/45 kilograms – 300 pounds/136 kilograms
  • Frequently standing up and moving about the facility
  • Frequently handling objects and equipment to maintain the facility
  • Frequently bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and crawling
  • Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical skills, preventive maintenance procedures, and reasonable understanding of building equipment and hand tools.
  • Communication skills are used frequently when interacting with the other hotel staff and hotel guests
  • Reading and writing abilities are used to document or record all tasks completed, to order supplies, to receive instructions for the day or to read equipment repair manuals
  • Mathematical skills, including basic math, are used frequently
  • Have the ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and/or holidays
  • This position will also require access to a personal telephone in case of emergency or offsite need and access to internet for email communication.
