Job Description

Registered Nurse Director of Nursing- DON 125K-150K/year

 

Located in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge.

General Purpose:

The general purpose of this position is to plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of the Nursing Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern the facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator and / or Medical Director, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is always maintained.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in long-term care, preferably having function as a Charge Nurse and Resident Care Manager (or comparable positions).

Must be able to demonstrate the ability to lead the department and its personnel in a professional manner and develop necessary professional relationships outside of the facility.

Must be capable of performing the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Physical Requirements (With or without the aid of mechanical devices)

Visual and auditory acuity within normal limits, fine hand coordination, frequent standing, walking; periodic bending, kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing, and pulling wheelchairs and other equipment.NO-LIFT facility - lifting residents without mechanical device is prohibited. Transfer of residents as indicated via BSCP: move residents in bed (40 lbs.), up in bed (60 lbs.), chair to standing (60 lbs.). Ability to communicate with residents and other personnel, read and write, and remain calm under stress.

Potential for exposure to blood/body fluids.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Plan, develop, organize, evaluate, and direct the nursing department, as well as its programs and activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the facility.

Oversee the MDS schedule and complete MDS, CAAs, and Care Plans according to state and federal regulations.

Participates in daily or weekly management team meetings.

Develop, maintain, and periodically update written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.

Maintain a reference library of written nursing material (i.e., Regulations, Standards of Practice, etc.) that will assist the nursing service department in meeting the day-to-day needs of the patient.

Develop, maintain, and periodically update the Nursing Service Procedures Manual and nursing service objectives and philosophies.

Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator, as necessary/required, concerning the operation of the nursing service department.

Develop methods for coordination of nursing services with other patient services to ensure the continuity of the patients’ total regimen of care. Including collaborating with physicians, consultants, community agencies, and institutions to improve quality of services and care.

Develop, implement, and maintain an ongoing quality assurance program for the nursing service department.

Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as necessary or as may be directed.

Lead the Quality Assessment & Assurance Committee in developing and implementing appropriate plans of action to correct identified deficiencies.

Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, 23-hour review, etc., as necessary.

Monitor the facility’s QI, QM, and survey reports. Assist in developing plans of action to correct potential or identified problem areas.

Agree not to disclose patient’s protected health information and promptly report suspected or known violations of such disclosure to the Executive Director.

Serve on, participate in, and attend various committees of the facility as appointed by the Administrator.

Determine the staffing needs of the nursing service department necessary to meet the total nursing needs of the patients.

Assign enough registered or licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants for each shift to ensure that quality care is maintained.

Develop work assignments and schedule duty hours, and/or assist nursing supervisory staff in completing and performing such tasks.

Make daily rounds of the nursing service department to ensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.

Review complaints and grievances made or filed by department personnel and/or residents.

Ensure that departmental disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, handicap, or marital status.

Participate in the screening and selection of patients for admission to the facility.
Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room assignment, etc.

Review nurses’ notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the patient’s response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the patient’s wishes.

Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.

Provide leadership training that includes the administrative and supervisory principles essential for Resident Care Managers / Charge Nurses.

Assist in the development of in-service training programs for the nursing staff. Ensure that these programs meet the continuing education requirements that allow licensed personnel (e.g., RNs, LPNs, CNAs, etc.) to keep their licenses on an active status.

Recommend to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the department.

Ensure that a stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is always maintained on premises to adequately meet the needs of the patient.

Ensure that only trained and authorized personnel operate the department’s equipment. Review care plans and nurses’ notes to determine if the care plans are being followed.

Monitor nursing care to ensure that all patients are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect. Report and investigate all allegations of patient abuse and/or misappropriation of patient property.

Ensure that nursing staff personnel honor the patient’s refusal of treatment request. Ensure that such requests are in accordance with the facility’s policies governing advance directives.

Hold Infection Control Certification
Oversee MDS coordination; audits, signatures and completion when needed. Accept other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Administrator.
