Instructional Designer

 Our Organization: Illustrative Mathematics

IM seeks to ensure that students, particularly students who have historically been underserved, and their teachers have access to aligned, grade-level, mathematics curriculum resources, and that teachers experience professional learning that leads to enduring mathematical learning for their students.

 

The Department: The Instructional Designer is a part of the IM Product Strategy and Development Department that drives the direction and success of the organization’s product strategy, roadmap, and development, aligned to IM’s vision and goals. The team develops and executes strategic plans and initiatives to meet clients’ and partners’ needs by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to define product requirements and develop innovative solutions that support and enhance the IM classroom experience. Critical to that experience are the team’s talented group of math educators, designers, and technologists whose highest priority is setting up students and teachers for success with coherent, standards-aligned, equity focused, problem based PreK-12 curricula and professional learning products.

 

Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Instructional Designer who will report to the Sr. Director, Product Strategy and contribute to the creation of high-quality and accessible math education experiences. As an Instructional Designer, you will play a crucial role in creating effective, engaging, and user-centered learning experiences for our educational products. The successful candidate will bring expertise in both print and digital instructional design to create impactful educational resources. As a key contributor, you will play a crucial role in developing tools that empower educators and enhance learning experiences for students.

Travel Requirement: <20 percent 

 

Travel Notice: IM aims to provide employees with a minimum of two weeks' notice before requiring them to travel for the company. However, due to the specific demands of certain roles within IM, there may be instances where travel becomes necessary without the ability to provide the full two weeks' notice.

 Essential Functions/Key ResponsibilitiesFunctional Work
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to analyze learning needs and objectives, then design tailored instructional strategies and materials.
  • Implement pedagogical best practices to create dynamic and inclusive learning environments.
  • Conduct usability testing and gather feedback to continuously improve the user experience of both print and digital resources.
  • Translate user insights into intuitive and effective design solutions that align with the company's educational goals.
  • Leverage expertise in instructional design to seamlessly integrate print and digital components, ensuring a cohesive and effective learning experience.
  • Ensure that visual designs (including UX/UI) enhance content comprehension, accessibility  and engagement for a diverse user base.
Teamwork
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including graphic designers, developers, and content creators, to ensure seamless integration of design elements and functionality.
  • Manage project timelines and deliverables, ensuring that all instructional design projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
 Required Qualifications 
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Curriculum Development, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (minimum 8 years) in instructional design, preferably in the context of curriculum development.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing successful creation of print and digital educational materials.
  • Proficiency in instructional design principles, learning theories, and pedagogical approaches.
  • Familiarity with curriculum standards, assessment strategies, and educational trends.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent organizational, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to seeking and listening to feedback that encourages  growth, surfaces blindspots, and recognizes and disrupts patterns of inequity.
  • Excellent self-management and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a highly collaborative team to meet departmental and organizational goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Desire to learn and grow in an organization that is expanding its reach and impact.
  • Must reside in and be legally authorized to work in the USA.
 Preferred Qualifications  
  • Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility standards.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and content management systems (CMS).
  • Experience with data analysis and using insights to improve instructional design.
  • Background in technology, UX/UI, user research, or curriculum development.
  • Strong computer skills with cloud-based systems, especially Google Workspace applications, Zoom, and Slack.

Compensation and Benefits

In alignment with our commitment to equity in practice and policy, Illustrative Mathematics is committed to equity and transparency for our team and offers competitive salaries commensurate with experience and education. This position is exempt. The annual salary range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000.
