Lead Sexton (Director of Facilities) Job Description

 

Definition:

The title of “Sexton” in the Episcopal Church means, “a person who looks after a church and churchyard”.  Therefore, at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, our facility workers are referred to as Sextons, and the Director of Facilities is the Lead Sexton.

 

Purpose:

The purpose of the Lead Sexton at The Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea is to assure that all buildings and grounds of Bethesda-by-the-Sea are clean and orderly; have received basic preventive maintenance and repairs; and are ready as needed.  In addition, the Lead Sexton is responsible for the oversight, supervision, and direction of the other Sextons on the Bethesda staff.

 

Accountability:

Reports to the Parish Administrator to gain accountability, direction and needs assessment.   

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum High School diploma or GED, with one to three years related experience or training. 
  • The ability to read, communicate, comprehend, and carry out instructions, short correspondence, and memos, in English. 
  • Must be a self-starter, capable of taking initiative while at the same time being responsible and accountable to other staff members with whom they will be working. 
  • Reputation of a Christ-like attitude towards colleagues, parishioners, vendors, and members of the community.
  • Strong relational skills, service orientation, and a positive personal chemistry; must be comfortable guiding the work of a wide range of people including volunteers.
  • Absolute dependability, ability to communicate clearly, and honesty required.
  • Ability to make personal connections, connecting with people of all backgrounds.
  • Physical and emotional good health and social poise.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Availability to perform duties on all weekends, major holidays, and multiple evenings per week, in addition to weekday hours.
  • Computer, organizational, crowd management, and event planning skills.
  • The individual in this position must possess physical and sensory abilities necessary to perform all essential job functions and responsibilities safely and successfully, including, but not limited not: the ability to climb steps and ladders, bend, pull and push and the ability to move and carry objects that may weigh up to 50 lbs.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Check work schedule monthly, weekly, and daily, confirming adequate sexton coverage for the needs of the church.
  • Assist in the setting, and maintaining, policy and procedures for opening and closing all Bethesda buildings and grounds. 
  • Oversight and maintenance of buildings and grounds, assuring the cleanliness, preparedness, and good repair of our buildings and grounds always.
  • Manage the ordering for supplies and equipment, authorizing expenditures within approved yearly facility, maintenance, special projects, etc. budgets.
  • Discuss purchase requests with Parish Administrator when needed. All major requests shall be submitted to the Parish Administrator.
  • Meet regularly with the Parish Administrator (weekly / bi-weekly) to discuss priority of needs, personnel matters, wants/needs of the department and strategic planning for the facilities of Bethesda-by-the-Sea.
  • Assist Parish Administrator with the observations and evaluations of the other members of the Sexton team.
  • Assist in the yearly budgeting process, working closely with the Parish Administrator, putting together the financial needs for the upcoming fiscal year.  Additional work will be required with the Building and Grounds Committee and Finance Committee in this regard.
  • Work closely with the Executive Assistant to monitor the Church Calendar for Sexton and facility needs.
  • Work closely with the Hospitality / Events Coordinator to assure all needs are being met for all church scheduled events and activities.
  • Provide monthly update report to the Building and Grounds Committee on status of needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Coordination with various vendors that regularly provide services for the church, serving as primary contact.
  • Maintain an adequate “tool shed” to provide for the needs for the church.  This includes evaluating current items, replacing when needed and budgeting for new items.
  • Responsible for oversight of all safety and inspection logs.
  • Attend meetings as required or requested by the Rector or Parish Administrator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Rector or Parish Administrator.

  • Commensurate with experience. Health benefits included.
