Job Description
Description
We are currently seeking a creative leader within a diverse and growing team. As a Design Specialist at Banyan, you’ll translate strategic direction, research insights, and complex information into concepts and execution across a broad range of media and visual styles—and lead others in doing the same. This role requires a confident, collaborative design-thinker with a passion for social change – someone who can see the big picture, propose unique solutions to complex challenges, and jump in with both feet to execute consistently and creatively.

Sound like you? Read on…

Unique aspects of working at Banyan:

  • Navigating ambiguity and unknowns to recommend the best path forward
  • Working embedded in project teams with other cross-functional team members
  • Prioritizing solving problems for the audiences at hand within constraints of the project
  • Influencing the process of your project teams to arrive at high-quality solutions
  • Operating in a high-feedback (positive and constructive; giving and receiving) environment
  • Interfacing directly with clients in order to work with their teams, not just for them.
  • Committing to self-reflection in pursuit of equity

Key Responsibilities
This role at Banyan involves:

  • Translating strategic briefs, audience/user research, and other insights into branding, concepts, collateral, and web/social experiences that accomplish communications objectives.
  • Drawing upon a strong understanding of design principles to create effective communications, with a focus on layout, information design, user experience, accessibility, and inclusivity.
  • Leading creative meetings and design workshops with clients and project teams, including ideation, sketching, and rapid prototyping.
  • Concepting, planning, iterating, and delivering design assets for print and digital campaigns; web and interactive experiences; and infographics, posters, presentations, and other collateral.
  • Communicating sound rationale for design choices that inspires your colleagues and clients.
  • Contributing to a culture of collaboration, efficiency, and excellence.
  • Providing feedback to the work of team members on your projects as you seek to cultivate a continued reputation of excellence for the clients and audiences we serve.
  • Seeing both the details of the product, and beyond it into the greater vision of the goals of the project.
  • Executing assigned projects and associated tasks — and proactively seeking out efficiencies and recommending the best process — to ensure all deadlines are met or proactively addressed.
  • Performing responsibilities enthusiastically, with high initiative and follow-through within the scope, schedule, and budget parameters of each project.

This role requires a track record of demonstrable work experience and professional ingenuity, showing that you are:

  • A digital native, with a strong understanding of the trends, formats, and ideas shaping the web, social, and beyond.
  • A strong conceptual thinker and executer – your portfolio demonstrates your ability to start projects off from an incredibly strong position and come up with surprising, resonant concepts.
  • Passionate about social change, and a belief that good design can be a driver of that change.
  • Able to execute polished creative work with a focus on the details of graphic design, typography, and layout, and lead others to do the same for a visually cohesive suite of products.
  • A demonstrated leader and mentor, able to spark great ideas in your peers and guide the work of other designers across complex projects.
  • Able to work as part of a collaborative team: you know the difference between cultivating your own expertise and carrying an ego – you propose ideas with enthusiasm, take notes with humility, seek out the signal in the noise, and are equally comfortable working with designers and non-designers.
  • Committed to your own professional development: You’re more than familiar with the tools of the trade (Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, etc); you seek out influences and influencers; and you’ve dabbled in things outside of your comfort zone – animation, data visualization, illustration, physical media or whatever ignites your passion.
  • An exceptional communicator with critical organization and time management skills and the flexibility to adapt quickly to change.

People in this role might ask:
  • Who is the audience, and what are their needs, barriers, and context?
  • What are the most important messages to convey, and are we connecting and emphasizing those visually?
  • How do I turn something complicated into something easy to understand, engaging, accessible, digestible, and memorable?
  • How do I produce high-quality work given the limits (scope, schedule, budget) we’re working within?

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Required skills and experiences include:
  • 5+ years of professional design experience in an agency or client-services setting, and related degree.
  • A strong portfolio of relevant design work, definitely including – but not limited to! – work for campaigns and the web (UX and/or UI).
  • Expertise in Adobe CC suite (specifically Illustrator, Photoshop InDesign)
    • Optional: Proficient in After Effects and Premiere, Figma
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Miro, Mac OS
  • Ability to commute the Atlanta office in the Atlanta Dairies (Reynoldstown) 1 day per week

Optional skills, experiences, and/or characteristics that may set you apart include:
  • Experience working in Public Health, Non-Profit, or related sectors
  • Experience leading projects or teams
