Job Description

Director of Day Programs

JOB SUMMARY

This position plans, organizes, administers and supervises the agency’s day programs.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Directs and administers day program services, including VBC, Conti, and Greenhouse for persons with intellectual disabilities/developmental disabilities.

• Makes recommendations, secures approval, and implements actions to provide quality delivery of services to individuals and their families.

• Participates in the planning, formulation, and implementation of applicable contracts through consultation with the Associate Executive Director of Programs and with members of the program and center staff.

• Relates to parents, individuals, elected officials, interest and advocacy groups, civic/public organizations, and other interested parties to provide information and assistance.

• Ensures compliance with agency policies, Alabama Department of Mental Health guidelines, Medicaid guidelines; reports deviations to supervisor and/or governing authority.

• Directs the implementation of waiver and non-waiver Person Centered Plans (PCP) for persons receiving agency-provided day program services.

• Oversees the development of new training programs for persons receiving day program services; oversees the implementation of individualized behavior programs when needed.

• Ensures program attendance is accurately recorded.

• Maintains contacts with counterparts at other center and state locations and in other center work sections to discuss matters of mutual concern and of potential or actual effect upon the agency.

• Prepares for and assists in inspections; responds to recommendations resulting from various facility and site reviews.

• Manages the care and maintenance of physical property, including building and grounds, furnishings, recreation equipment, vehicles, etc.

• Monitors program purchases within allowed budget and keeps records while accepting accountability for expenditures.

• Prepares a variety of regular and special reports.

• Provides therapeutic services and supervision of persons served; plans and implements periodic evaluations and measurements to ensure quality programs for persons served; counsels and works with individuals and families to reduce and/or alleviate family stress.

• Supervises QDDP, day, and recreation/leisure services program staff; develops and ensures the availability of in-service training; counsels with employees about problems and concern; investigates and resolves areas of concern.

• Directs the operation of agency-provided paid activities and green house program.

• Maintains certification in CPR, First Aid, Medication Assistance (MAC), and as a CPI Instructor.

• Performs other duties and responsibilities deemed necessary; not otherwise specified.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of agency policies and of Alabama Department of Mental Health and Medicaid guidelines.

• Knowledge of the nature of intellectual disabilities and related clinical and sociological issues.

• Knowledge of program development and management principles.

• Knowledge of personnel management principles.

• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

• Knowledge of budget and inventory management principles.

• Skill in management and supervision.

• Skill in prioritizing and planning.

• Skill in interpersonal relations.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Associate Executive Director of Programs supervises and assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include agency policies, Alabama Department of Mental Health guidelines, and Medicaid guidelines. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of varied management, administrative, and supervisory duties. Strict regulations combined with the unique needs of individuals served contribute to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to direct the agency’s day program operations. Successful performance contributes to delivery of effective services to individuals.

CONTACTS

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other agency personnel, parents/guardians/caregivers, business leaders, individuals served, and members of the general public.

• Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, negotiate matters, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move over 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• The work is typically performed in an office.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over assigned Qualified Developmental Disabilities Professionals, Instructors Non-Degreed, Recreation Instructors, and Greenhouse Instructor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.

• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.

• Meets Alabama Department of Mental Health QDDP qualifications.

• Possession of a valid driver’s license, good driving record and required to obtain a CDL.
