The Assistant Controller plans and manages the overall department to include budgeting, cash management, accounting, payroll, contracts, grant management and administration of the accounting department.
Assistant Controller Essential Responsibilities:
- Manages Accounting staff to meet the responsibilities of the department.
- Supervise the overall operations of the accounting function to enforce and ensure consistent application of generally accepted accounting principles and organization policies.
- Responsible for oversight of daily accounting operations, including monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statement close process, general ledger reconciliations, and balance sheet reviews.
- Prepares monthly Board Financial Packets.
- Reviews daily bank balances and advises on cash flow issues and reviews all cash disbursements.
- Researches and reports unusual/large variances to budget or historical trends.
- Reviews interim and year-end audit preparation.
- Prepares audit papers as required for outside auditors; review audit for accuracy and makes recommendations to the auditors before the final report is issued.
- Assists with the annual budget and development process to prepare preliminary operating and capital budgets and reports.
- Projects and tasks assigned by the CFO.
- Other Responsibilities as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field degree from an accredited college.
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and practices, as well as reporting of financial data.
- At least five years’ experience in an equivalent role.
- Significant experience in or knowledge of accounting, compliance, and reporting.
- Experience managing finance and accounting software packages.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in MIP Fund Accounting Software preferable.
- Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.
- Working knowledge of payroll; familiarity with Paylocity a plus.
