The City of Vacaville invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Utilities. Currently, one vacancy exists within the Utilities Department but this recruitment will also establish an eligibility list to be used for any future vacancies over the next 12-month period.

Salary and Benefits Information
$170,732- $207,505/annually
This position may be eligible for a remote/hybrid work schedule.

The Assistant Director of Utilities manages, plans, supervises, and directs various programs, activities, operations, and long-range planning and development for Water Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations Divisions in the Utilities Department and provides highly complex professional staff assistance to the Utilities Director. Some examples of job duties are as follows:
- Assists the Director of Utilities in planning and managing Utilities Department operations
- Assists in the development and implementation of Department goals, objectives, priorities, policies, and procedures
- Plans, programs, and directs all activities related to the Water Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations Divisions involving the work of Wastewater and Water Operations, Collections, Distribution, Water Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance
The ideal candidate for this position will:
- Have broad knowledge of environmental issues related to water and wastewater, pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations;
- Have strong leadership abilities and be able to make tough decisions and effectively make changes when needed; and
- Cultivate good working relationships with a number of parties that include the City Council, City and Department staff, the development community, regulatory and outside agencies and the public.
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, business administration, public administration or a related field.
Experience: Six (6) years of extensive management-level work experience in public utility administration that includes water treatment and sanitary sewer utility planning, coordinating and financing. Professional engineering experience is highly desirable.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
A certificate of registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California is highly desirable.
A valid Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.A completed City of Vacaville application and supplemental questionnaire must be received by Human Resources at 650 Merchant Street, Vacaville, CA 95688 by 5:30 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2024.
