Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY: The overall purpose and general responsibilities of the job.

Assists with daily library operations, including checking books in and out, sorting and shelving books; compiling records; assisting patrons locate desired books, materials, publications, using computers, internet and other electronic devices; and performing other work-related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The fundamental duties and tasks that define the job.

  • Checks books, periodicals, movies, and other materials in and out at circulation desk; and resolves patron complaints regarding overdue items, fines, and other circulation matters.
  • Enters and updates patron’s records on computers.
  • Sorts books, publications, and other items according to established procedures and returns them to shelves, files, or other designated storage areas.
  • Locates library materials for patrons, including books, periodicals, movies, pictures, etc.
  • Assists patrons with the use of computer and other electronic devices and answer routine reference questions.
  • Inspects returned books for condition and due date status and computes any applicable fines.
  • Answers routine inquiries and refers patrons in need of professional assistance to librarians.
  • Prepares and presents routing group service programs for children, young adults, or adults.
  • Maintains records of items received, stored, issued, and returned according to system used.
  • Performs clerical activities such as filing, typing, word processing, photocopying, faxing, mailing out material and sorting mail.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

SECTION II – JOB DIMENSIONS

CONTACTS: Nature of contacts, external relationships, and internal relationships.

Provides general information related to library science and computer assistance.

Internal Contacts: Constant contact with departmental staff related to operations of the library.

External Contacts: Constant contact with library patrons to provide information.

RESPONSIBILITY: Supervision given accountability, safety, budgeting, spending authority and confidentiality.

Primary responsibility for managing the day-to-day functions of the department in a safe and efficient manner. Job has significant impact on City operations, budget, and public image.

DIFFICULTY: Judgment, initiative, and decision-making.

Judgment is necessary in selecting appropriate established guidelines to follow. Deviations require prior approval.

GUIDANCE: Supervision received and level of independence.

Employee receives direction when performing the essential job functions. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines or procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Working environment and other conditions of employment.

Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. Exposure to moderate levels of fumes, oils, lubricants, and cleaners daily with limited exposure to risks controlled by safety precautions.

SECTION III - JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum requirements for formal education and job-related experience.

Graduation from high school or GED and 2 years of library experience involving circulation, cataloging or reference assistance; or an equivalent combination of education and/or related experience.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Utilized in the performance of the essential functions of the job.

  • Knowledge of basic library science techniques and procedures
  • Knowledge of and proficient in the use of computers
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics, spelling, and grammar
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to perform general clerical tasks

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements associated with performance of the Essential Job Functions.

Physical requirements include carrying/lifting 10 lbs. and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 30 lbs.; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate telephone, personal computer, basic office equipment; subject to carrying, lifting, twisting, kneeling, standing and reaching to perform essential job functions.
