Job title

Carpenter– Dock Shop

Job purpose

Performs carpentry work required in the maintenance and construction of marine railways and floating dry docks. Master, 1st, 2nd and 3rd class levels are based on proficiency, knowledge, skills and abilities.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Receive work orders and prints or sketches for the job. Makes sketches showing construction details for the job. Estimates material requirements and tools or equipment needed to perform job.
  2. Sets up and operates wood working tools to cut, form and finish job. Erects or dismantles structures, repairs or refinishes walls and structures.
  3. Installs wood or metal parts. Installs glass or replaces broken glass as required. Prepares irregular scaffolding which may be required.
  4. Lubricates and maintains carpenter shop equipment.
  5. Crates machinery and other equipment for shipment.
  6. Completes finish work and all types of flooring as well as fiber glass tail shafts for vessels.
  7. Operates back hoe
  8. Drop ceilings
  9. Concrete work
    1. Involved in dredging and pile driving
    2. Pier repair
  10. Trail boards for vessels
  11. Shifting of all vessels and work floats
  12. Interference removals (IWO) in accordance with work order steel work, pipe work, and electrical work
  13. Installation of oil booms

Additional responsibilities:

  1. May work as part of mechanics team in semi-annual overhaul program.
  2. May do touch up or incidental painting after structural repair.
  3. May repair pallets and skids as time is available.
  4. Assists in blocking for vessels on marine railways and floating dry docks.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Work in overhead structures and around beneath machinery.
  2. Additionally, injury exposure could be severe, cuts and bruises; considerable physical effort of hands and arms are required.

Frequent contact with skilled trade workers, superintendents, and/ or customers.

Work Environment

Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High school degree or equivalent.

Preferred Education or Experience

Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.

  1. Experience in a Shipyard/ Military setting.
  1. Skills, knowledge or experience required for this occupation will depend on the job class. Must include related on-the-job training and experience in shipbuilding, marine railways, floating dry docks, and carpenter work
