Job Description Summary

Acceptance to a position in this job family constitutes participation in the Actuarial Student Program at The Standard. The mission of the Actuarial Student Program is to grow actuarial knowledge, business acumen and leadership skills in our Actuaries to enable the achievement of organizational goals. Actuarial students are expected to progress through the levels of the job family based on academic/exam achievements and by developing their analytical skills, independent decision making, and effective communication and leadership skills.

Key Elements of Position

We are seeking an aspiring actuary to join our Asset Modeling team. In this critical role, you will support the team by delivering and effectively communicating model results. Your focus will be on model development, automation, and deployment, specifically related to Interest Rate and Market Risk. Collaborating with stakeholders, you'll contribute to informed decision-making and drive successful business outcomes through actuarial analysis.

As part of our actuarial student development program, you'll have the opportunity for one additional rotational assignment-exposing you to different facets of the business. Expect to rotate roles approximately every 2-3 years within our four distinct product lines (each supported by an actuarial team) and our corporate actuarial department. This program offers a wealth of options to expand your actuarial skills and knowledge throughout your career at The Standard.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Model Building and Dissemination: Assist in constructing models and disseminating results crucial for risk management and investment decisions.
  • Collaboration and Solution Design: Collaborate with fellow modelers to design and develop solutions for new initiatives, while adhering to model control standards.
  • Business Understanding: Develop a comprehensive understanding of The Standard's profitability, growth, Asset Liability Management (ALM), and risk management.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Support the team by investigating models and results, responding to stakeholder inquiries, and effectively communicating findings to team members.


Qualifications Required
  • Education: A bachelor's degree in actuarial science, Mathematics, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Actuarial Exams: Successful completion of three or more actuarial exams sponsored by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or equivalent within the past eighteen months.
  • Excel Proficiency: Experience with pivot tables and functions such as Vlookups and Index/Match.
  • Programming skills: Some proficiency in programming languages such as Python or VBA.
  • Work Authorization: Must be a U.S. citizen or have work authorization to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship (these roles are not sponsorship eligible).


Qualifications Desired
  • Experience: Actuarial internship experience modeling in GGY AXIS and/or programming in Python.
  • Collaboration: Ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge: A basic understanding of financial assets and life insurance products.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.


Salary Range:
$78,500.00 - $115,250.00
