Job Description

About Us

Digital is different. It's complicated and interconnected. It's ever-changing. What worked yesterday may not work today. GRAYBOX was built around the idea that all companies need a partner in digital experiences — someone that understands the internet holistically, knows your goals, and keeps your business afloat and successful in a digital-first world.

GRAYBOX is made with love from PDX.

We built our headquarters in the formerly-industrial neighborhood of the central eastside in SE Portland. We have one of the best views in PDX and intentionally built out our 10,000 sq. ft studio to maximize collaboration and creativity. Our office is a little weird, but it's dripping in gravitas and has an unusual collection of coffee mugs.

What We Believe

  • We create with intent. Craftsmanship describes our ideal approach to working on our work.
  • We want everyone—both our partners and our team—to have an overall positive experience while working with us. It feels delightful to spend time with us.
  • We operate with a growth-mindset so we can stay relevant and advise partners on the latest and greatest approaches and tools to achieve goals.
  • We are professional—how we work, matters.
  • We are stewards of things. This is an ethical belief that when entrusted by another with oversight over their thing, we should manage it responsibly & carefully as if it was also OUR thing.

About the Role

As a UX/UI Designer, you are passionate about planning, and crafting effortless and elegant online experiences. Your work is solution-oriented, creating intuitive products that empower users. This role requires someone who is detail-oriented and can collaborate closely with our partners to develop and bring to life their digital brands. Every day, you’ll work with clients and our creative team to inform design systems, prototype and solve complex problems for websites, e-commerce, and applications. Your unique voice elevates the design work and sets the tone of each project. You sweat the details and work across teams to ensure each solution performs and delivers on strategy, UX, and business goals.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop design systems and experiences for partners in collaboration with our Creative Director, other designers, content strategists, and developers.

  • Expand and iterate upon existing designs, UI components / component libraries as well as brand and style libraries.

  • Design with an understanding of grid systems and responsive / adaptive methodologies for a variety of viewports for web and mobile devices.

  • Deliver high-fidelity prototypes with detailed design expectations and specifications.

  • Keep up with current web standards and UI/UX best practices for content sites as well as e-commerce platforms such as Shopify, Magento, Big Commerce, etc.

  • Deep dive into usability & heuristic audits, user and market research, and testing

  • Participate in design reviews and participate in a culture of critique

  • Create prototypes of varying methods and levels of fidelity.

  • Create products and experiences that are accessible and inclusive for their users

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience in user experience and/or customer experience design.

  • A curated portfolio / selection of digital design work that could include web design, ecommerce, and product-focused websites—bonus points for illustration, motion design and applied brand work. If your portfolio shines with an abundance of print, collateral design, or campaign / ad work, this role may not be a good fit for you at this time, but keep us on your list for another opportunity.

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate clearly with designers, strategists, developers, and client/partners.

  • Ability to contribute to team growth and process improvement.

  • Must be proficient in Figma — prototyping, auto-layout, shared design libraries—as well as Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Experience with motion design and Lottie is a plus.

  • Ability to articulate design decisions and UX rationale.

  • Ability and desire to contribute to team growth and process improvement.

How We’ll Support You

Job titles can span more than one career level or mean different things depending on where you’ve worked, so we’re casting a wide net. The starting salary for this role is between $65,000-$85,000. Your actual salary can be dependent on several factors such as work experience, related or transferable skills, creative team needs, and your ability to negotiate.

Additionally, we offer:

  • Paid Time Off (16 days to start, increases with tenure) + 8 Holidays: This is your time to recharge, reflect, climb mountains, go outside, stay inside, grow your brain, or support those around you.

  • Insurance: We offer health, dental, and vision insurance (partially paid for you)

  • Professional development: We provide an annual education allowance of $1,000/year to help you keep growing into the next best version of yourself. With a mindset of always learning, and always iterating, we invest in our team year over year.

  • Flexible time: We have a set of core hours to support and facilitate collaboration between teams as part of our cadence of working. But we all know that life happens and things may need to suddenly move to support you and those around you.

  • Bereavement Leave: We want you to focus on what is most important in a difficult time. We’ll take care of here, while you take care of there.

  • Sabbatical: Every 5 years, we offer you 5 weeks of space to just be you.

  • New Parent Leave: We pay for 100% of Short-Term Disability Coverage at about 50% of pay for up to 6 months.

  • 401(k): We match up to 4% of your salary, vested day 1.

  • A flexible and varied selection of insurance offerings—Term Life, Accidental Death & Disability, Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, Pet, Auto, Home, Personal Excess Liability, FSAs, and HSAs.

Your Location
