What is a digital designer?

A digital designer is a graphic designer who specializes in web, video, and other digital media. As a digital designer, you are the creative mind behind the design of websites, software projects, online videos, and more. Your job duties are to consult with clients to learn their needs and wants, develop wireframes of your design ideas, and collaborate with other designers and developers to make your vision a reality. You can find digital designer jobs at design firms, marketing agencies, digital media companies, and other web-focused businesses. Since the creative world is shifting more towards freelancing, working for yourself is also a possibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in design principles, and a relevant degree in graphic or digital design. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and Sketch is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, and the ability to receive and apply feedback are essential soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for producing compelling digital content that meets client objectives and enhances user experiences.

Job description

Benefits:
Insurance (Health, Dental), 401K with match and profit-sharing, Disability/life insurance, casual environment, 4 weeks PTO, flex schedule, professional development budget
As Digital Designer, you'll help shape that research into actual concepts, working alongside strategists on client insights and turning them into interfaces people want to use. This isn't a production-only seat. You'll be in strategy conversations from the start.
What you'll do:
  • Design responsive websites and digital experiences grounded in audience research
  • Build and evolve visual brand systems, including logo and identity work
  • Present concepts directly to clients and defend your design decisions
  • Mentor junior designers as the team grows
  • Collaborate with writers and strategists on creative concepts, including new business pitches

What you bring:
  • 2-5 years in UX/web design, less if the portfolio proves you can do the job
  • A portfolio with a range of styles, not one look repeated
  • Comfort designing for mobile and responsive web
  • Experience building brand systems, not just working inside someone else's
  • A second strength beyond web design, illustration, typography, motion, or front-end code
