Medical Billing Manager

What Does a Medical Billing Manager Do?

Medical billing managers process insurance claims and manage the billing department of a physician’s office or health care facility. As a medical billing manager, your responsibilities include negotiating insurance contracts with insurance companies, tracking payments made by insurance agencies and patients, and hiring and training new employees in the billing department. Medical billing involves detailed coding, and as manager, you must ensure your staff understands and follows coding procedures, and that all medical chart codes are accurate.

How to Become a Medical Billing Manager

The primary qualifications for becoming a medical billing manager are a college degree in a relevant field and at least one year of experience in billing for a health care organization. Many medical billing managers spend several years in accounting or business management before transferring to this field. Any experience running a medical office or department can help you stand out from other billing managers. Fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of a medical billing manager requires familiarity with the billing process, communication skills, leadership skills, and good judgment when resolving problems. In some offices, you may also need the social skills to work with ill, elderly, disabled, upset, or hostile patients.
