TITLE: Animal Care and Transport Assistant FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Transport/Animal Care/Operations EFFECTIVE DATE: 7/1/21

JOB SUMMARY: To care for, prepare and transport animals to Young-Williams Animal Center locations and partner locations to facilitate their adoption. Also to pick up necessary supplies and donations to keep the organization running smoothly.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

This position is supervised by : Transport Manager

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB INCLUDE:

Animal Care :

1. Clean rooms/cages and keep all animals comfortable, ensuring they have proper food, water and enrichment, while monitoring them for physical and/or behavioral concerns and reporting any issues as they arise
2. Handle animals in a safe and humane manner as you move them throughout the building, based on their adoption/availability status
3. Work with animals in need of specialized behavioral care and training
4. Provide medical care to animals such as administering oral medications
5. Other duties as assigned

Transport:

1. Ensure safety and comfort of animals during transport.

2. Keep time to a minimum while animals are being transported.

3. Pick up donations from The Village, PetCo, YWAC partners and any other location deemed necessary by management or administration.

4. When interacting with fellow employees and general public, be able to demonstrate patience, empathy, and good communication.

5. Be able to continue and solidify YWAC relationships with PetCo, PetSmart, and other community partners.

6. Ensure all animals, contracts, and payments are accompanied with an inventory sheet and turned into Finance Director.

7. Be a good steward, when you are driving a YWAC vehicle, you are representing ALL of us.

8. Keep vehicles and crates clean, do not leave a mess for someone else to clean up.

9. Other duties as assigned

Requirements

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

Required

a. Must be 25 years or older to apply.

b. Active driver's license and clear driving record

c. Positive, optimistic outlook

d. High school diploma or equivalent

e. Basic computer skills and ability to learn shelter software

f. Proven ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy workplace environment

g. Understanding of humane care and treatment of animals

h. Ability to lift up to 70 pounds

2. Preferred

a. Previous customer service experience.

b. Fear Free shelter certified.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Indoors in a high noise air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors while loading and unloading animals and supplies from vehicles

2. Equipment use:

a. Includes use of PC, printer, copy machine, fax machine, cell phone, cleaning equipment and supplies, company vehicle and/or

3. Work hours:

a. Work hours will vary

b. Evening and weekend and holiday hours will be required

4. Regular exposure to animals and their bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, bites, and scratches.

5. Heavy lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds with assistance

6. Regular upright movement, such as standing or walking

7. Working independently, with minimal supervision

8. Working in this field requires the development of self-care skills to combat compassion fatigue
