Sommelier at Peninsula Grill

Who we are: Charleston is one of North America’s best-preserved architectural treasures. With its antebellum mansions, cobblestone streets and serene harbor, the city wears a patina of European-influenced splendor. Originally built in 1844, the Planters Inn stands in the very heart of the Historic District. From flickering carriage lanterns to handcrafted four-poster beds from the Baker Historic Charleston Foundation Collection, this is where understated elegance meets Lowcountry inspiration. The courtyard is a charming urban oasis adorned with boxwoods, fountains and fruit trees, a romantic setting in which to experience the regional American cuisine of the acclaimed Peninsula Grill.

JOB SUMMARY: Minimum 5 years’ experience in 4 or 5 diamond or 4- or 5-star hotel or restaurant. At Peninsula Grill we are looking for a Sommelier to act as our wine expert and create wine lists that pair with our food menus. Sommelier responsibilities include recommending wine varieties to our guests, supervising wine serving and collaborating with winemakers to renew our selections and achieve better prices. To be qualified for this role, you should have relevant experience in hospitality or a vineyard.

Ultimately, you will delight our guests by helping them choose the best wine to complement their dinner here at Peninsula Grill.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Create and update the wine list in coordination with chefs and the Food and Beverage Manager
  • Recommend food and wine pairings
  • Advise guests on wines based on their personal tastes and food choices
  • Inform guests about different varieties of wines and prices
  • Ensure wines are served at the right temperature and within the proper glassware
  • Store open bottles properly to maintain strong taste
  • Manage wine cellar and ensure its fully stocked
  • Train wait staff on available wines
  • Ask guests for ID to verify legal drinking age
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations
  • MUST be able to work a flexible shift that includes: Days, Afternoons, Nights and Weekends. Plus, work Holidays as well, if needed.

Note: May be assigned other duties by supervisor or management

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience as a Sommelier, Wine Steward/Stewardess in 4 or 5 diamond or 4- or 5-star hotel or restaurant
  • Must obtain valid ServSafe Certification
  • Certification as a Sommelier or degree in hospitality is preferred

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to create tasteful food and wine pairings
  • Extensive knowledge of different wines and which regions produce each type
  • Knowledge of local vineyards and wineries
  • Able to work overtime as needed

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to talk, hear, see, stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, reach and perform repetitive motions.
  • Able to work in a fast paced, stressful environment
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, carry or otherwise move up to 50 lbs.
