Job description

You've built a meaningful career in HR. You know how to navigate high-stakes situations: building culture and engagement best practices, navigating tricky employee situations, leading manager and employee development, hiring great team members, and coaching managers through real challenges, not just giving quick answers.
Now, you’re starting to think about what’s next. Maybe it’s work that feels more balanced and flexible. Less about carrying it all for one organization, and more about expanding your impact in a way that’s energizing and fully leverages your expertise. Have you been or considered being an HR Consultant?
If that's where you are, we'd love to talk.

We’re hiring an HR Consultant to join our team! HR Annie Consulting is a women-owned HR consulting firm based in Portland, OR. We’ve been supporting businesses with all things HR for over 15 years through a culture, best-practice, and compliance-focused lens. Our clients span the Pacific Northwest and beyond, and they come in all sizes and industries. What they have in common: they genuinely care about their people, and they trust us to tell them what they need and guide them through the process of getting there.
Key Details:
  • Pay: $90,000 - $120,000/year, depending on experience & qualifications; we are looking for either a consultant or senior consultant to join the team
  • Benefits: Employer-paid health insurance premiums; 401(k) with 3% employer contribution; generous PTO + paid holidays; profit-sharing bonus; cell phone & internet reimbursement; AAA membership; Employee Assistance Program; professional development reimbursement; and much more
  • Location: We work at our company office in SE Portland and onsite with clients, typically 2-3 days per week, plus from our home offices.
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, full-time (40+ hours/week), generally regular business hours
As an HR Consultant, you’ll work with clients and serve as their trusted HR partner and expert. This role is both strategic and operational. You might spend the morning in an HR infrastructure review meeting with a new client, and the afternoon drafting a corrective action or reviewing a leave request. Both matter here, and you'll need to move comfortably between them.
A typical day could include:
  • Meeting with business owners and HR leaders to understand their HR operations and define the work ahead
  • Handling employee relations - investigations, protected leaves, performance management, and terminations
  • Building HR infrastructure: policies, handbooks, onboarding programs, compensation frameworks, and compliance practices
  • Advising clients on complex HR issues, including multi-state employment law questions
  • Working with HR Annie's recruitment, training, and background check teams to deliver coordinated services to clients
  • Managing project timelines, administrative recordkeeping, and billable hours goals
  • Representing HR Annie at networking events, workshops, and speaking engagements; mentoring colleagues on the consulting team
You’re probably a great fit if:
  • You thrive in an autonomous and dynamic work environment. You take initiative, own your work, and don't need someone telling you what to do next.
  • You're as comfortable in a strategy conversation with a business owner as you are writing policies. You are proactive and draw on your years of experience to solve problems.
  • You lead with a generous spirit, and you find genuine satisfaction in helping clients solve problems that matter to their people.
  • This isn’t your first HR role. You have several years of hands-on experience across the full employee lifecycle and have supported a multi-state workforce. That experience might come from time as an HR Manager, HR Business Partner, or HR Director across multiple organizations and/or industries.
Something to keep in mind: This is a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves role. Our consultants stay close to the work, and they like it that way. If you're ready to step fully away from the tactical side of HR, or haven’t been doing day-to-day HR work, this probably isn't the right fit.
We’ve built something here worth protecting: a culture of trust, mutual respect, and real work-life integration. People come to HR Annie because the work is good. And so are the people we do it with.
