Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Tax Counsel,Compensation, Benefits and U.S. Information Reporting, located in Houston, Texas,through August 28th, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. (CT).

Serve as Chevron's lead tax advisor on the taxation of compensation, benefits, payroll, workforce mobility, and U.S. information reporting. Partner with the business, legal, HR, payroll, executive compensation and finance teams to deliver strategic and technical tax advice, manage tax risk, support federal, state, and international compliance, and develop sustainable processes for the taxation and reporting of employee, executive, and service-provider payments.

This position reports to Managing Tax Counsel in Chevron's Corporate Tax Legal group.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

The primary role is to serve as Chevron's lead tax advisor on compensation, benefits, payroll, HR, workforce mobility, and US information reporting matters, providing technical guidance on complex tax issues and supporting compliance with federal, state, and international tax requirements. Partner with corporate stakeholders and leadership to achieve business objectives in view of tax cost and compliance impacts.

  • Analyze the tax implications of compensation, benefits, equity, and deferred compensation programs, executive perquisites, and M&A transactions, developing practical solutions that align tax requirements and business objectives.
  • Advise on the taxation, withholding, and reporting of employee, executive, director, contractor and vendor payments, including payroll reporting, Forms W-2, 1099, and 1042 reporting, treaty-based withholding claims, and related compliance obligations.
  • Advise on the tax treatment of non-cash fringe benefits and perquisites (for example, personal use of corporate aircraft, spousal travel, and company-provided vehicles), including imputed income valuation, proxy disclosure coordination, and payroll reporting.
  • Represent the tax function in federal and state audits and examinations of Chevron's payroll tax and U.S. information reporting compliance, by developing technical positions, coordinating responses to information requests, and supporting audit defense strategies.

This role will also contribute to the general advisory function of the Tax Legal group, and will be expected to assist with research and advisory pertaining to US federal income tax generally, including:

  • The domestic and international provisions of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • U.S. tax implications relevant to U.S. and non-U.S. corporate entities and partnerships.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) froma U.S. law school.
  • Active bar membership in good standing (any U.S. jurisdiction)
  • Practicing attorney with 3+ years of experience in compensation and benefits matters and/or information reporting in a law firm, in-house corporate department, or Big 4 accounting firm.
  • An extensive understanding of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and the Treasury Regulations thereunder, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with peers and varied groups of both internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • LL.M. in Taxation or CPA.
  • Experience advising on executive compensation, equity, and global mobility in a large multinational or public company environment.

Relocation Options

Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.

International Considerations

Expatriate assignments will not be considered.
