What are used cars?

Used cars are vehicles that have been previously owned and driven by at least one other person before being offered for sale again. These cars are typically sold through dealerships, private sellers, or certified pre-owned programs. Buying a used car can be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a brand-new vehicle, as used cars often have lower prices and slower depreciation rates. However, it’s important to research the car’s history, condition, and value before making a purchase.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a used car salesperson, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Used Car Salesperson, you need strong sales skills, knowledge of automotive products, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with CRM software, dealership inventory management systems, and vehicle history reporting tools is important. Exceptional interpersonal skills, negotiation abilities, and customer service orientation help build trust and close deals. These skills and qualities ensure customer satisfaction, drive sales performance, and foster long-term client relationships in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges faced by used car sales representatives, and how can they overcome them?

Used car sales representatives often face challenges such as building trust with customers, accurately assessing vehicle conditions, and meeting sales targets in a competitive environment. To overcome these challenges, it’s important to have strong product knowledge, provide transparent communication about vehicle history, and maintain excellent customer service. Collaborating closely with the service and finance teams can also help streamline the buying process and address customer concerns effectively.

Job description

Ourisman, Trusted Tradition

Here's to those who think differently. The ones who think that a car dealership's first priority should be the guest. Such a candid idea could only come from Ourisman. Because we're forward thinking, just like the communities we serve. Individuals who won't be constrained by how things "have always been done", but instead strive to do things "how they could be done" and "how they should be done." It is a philosophy we have infused into every fabric of our dealerships, from the bottom up, in every department, and in every Ourisman team member. Changing the way we all think about car buying is just the beginning.

Role Summary

Ourisman Automotive Group is seeking an experienced and results-driven Used Car Director to oversee the used car sales operations, ensuring profitability, efficiency, and high customer satisfaction. The Used Car Director will be responsible for managing inventory, pricing strategies, sales teams, and marketing efforts to drive pre-owned vehicle sales.

More about the role

  • Manage and maintain optimal levels of used car inventory by purchasing, appraising, and disposing of vehicles.
  • Ensure inventory is properly reconditioned and ready for retail.
  • Monitor aged inventory and implement strategies to move older stock efficiently.
  • Oversee the used car sales team, providing leadership, training, and coaching to improve performance.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of sales processes, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Foster a customer-first culture, ensuring a high level of satisfaction from the initial contact through the sales process and post-sale follow-up.
  • Establish and monitor pricing strategies to maximize gross profit while staying competitive in the market.
  • Regularly review financial statements, reports, and sales metrics to assess performance and adjust strategies as necessary.
  • Monitor and manage the online presence of the used car inventory, ensuring accurate descriptions, pricing, and images.
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor the used car sales team, ensuring a positive work environment that encourages high performance and continuous development.
  • Maintain accurate records of used vehicle transactions, ensuring compliance with dealership policies and legal standards.
  • Work closely with the Service and Parts departments to ensure vehicles are properly inspected, reconditioned, and ready for sale.

What we look for

  • Proven experience in automotive sales, preferably in used car sales management or a related role. Previous experience as a Sales Manager, Finance Manager, or General Sales Manager is advantageous.
  • In-depth knowledge of automotive market trends, inventory management, and sales processes. Proficient in dealership management systems (DMS), CRM software, and digital sales platforms.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information and negotiate deals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret sales data and make strategic decisions.
  • A strong commitment to providing excellent customer service and maintaining high customer satisfaction.

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance options
  • Short-term and Long-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Paid time off and holiday leave
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth

Ourisman Automotive Group is an equal opportunity employer. We believe in hiring a diverse workforce and sustaining an inclusive, people-first culture. We are committed to non-discrimination on any protected basis, such as disability and veteran status, or any other basis covered under applicable law.
