SEIU Education & Support Fund: Fast Food Canvasser

This is a full time, temporary position funded through 12/31/26, with the possibility of extension.

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

This position is employed by Good Works Matters! (GOWO!), which serves as the employer of record. This position will work on the SEIU ESF fast food workers education work under our day-to-day direction. An increasing number of Americans – most of whom are women and people of color – are employed in service sector jobs that are marked by low wages, no health care, job insecurity, and lack of training and career advancement opportunities. The SEIU Education & Support Fund tackles these issues by designing and facilitating worker-centered, relationship-based, and accessible education, training and workforce development programs. We serve as a strategic partner to the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and collaborate with other unions, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and employers to help workers access good jobs and spark positive social change. Throughout our work, we promote a culture of empowerment that honors experience, culture, diversity, and inclusion.

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a Los Angeles-based worker canvasser who is fluent in Spanish, and may also be fluent in English. The successful candidate will be responsible for reaching out to fast food workers in Los Angeles on behalf of SEIU ESF to advance a program of know-your-rights training for fast-food workers. The successful candidate will be dedicated to workers' rights, and to empowering workers to stand up for their rights at work. Candidates must be flexible and willing to work long and varied hours, with early morning, evening, and weekend work, as necessary. This role supports organizing work with SEIU ESF's fast food workers education work. Good Works Matters! serves as the employer of record for this position, handling all employment administration including payroll and benefits.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifying and signing up workers in the fast food workplace. This includes engaging workers at or near their workplace, areas of public transit.
  • Visiting fast food stores, making house visits, and conducting phone banks.
  • Building one-on-one relationships with workers.
  • Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to participate in workers' rights training programs.
  • Turning out workers to events and trainings
  • Identifying and developing leaders who want to help lead trainings, and/or recruit coworkers to participate.
  • Coordinating with workers to gather information that is useful in identifying opportunities to develop and conduct effective training.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Willingness to go inside fast food stores to talk to workers.
  • Ability to work highly independently.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passionate about economic and social justice.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and adapt to a changing schedule.
  • Bilingual speaking ability- English and Spanish.
  • Ability to engage and inspire people regardless of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, language, class and/or experiences.
  • A valid driver's license, working vehicle, and ability to drive 15 passenger vans.
  • Ability to engage workers regardless of race, age, ability, and gender.
  • Experience working in the service industry is highly preferred, with experience working in the fast food industry most preferable.
